* as silly as a sheep – extremely quiet
101. What language function is called metalinguistic?
The metalinguistic function of language It is the one used to explain and imply the use of the elements that make up a language. In other words, it refers to the ways a language is described and the way it should be applied.

From another perspective, the metalinguistic function is one that is used to clarify the norms that govern the use of words and grammatical conditions within a specific language. In general, quotation marks ("") are used to refer to the reflection or explanation of a specific word.

  • Interlingual (borrowed from other languages) : with a grain of salt – latin , by heart – French, the moment of truth – Spanish, blue blood – Spanish

107. NOMINATIVE FUNCTION



  • Nominative function is naming objects and situations of the real world, filling in lacunas in the lexical system of the language, or creating phraseological synonyms to existing lexemes thus enriching the language world picture:

  • E.g. 1. Swim like a fish/drink like a fish;

2. Bold as a lion/weak as a kitten;
3. Dark horse; black sheep; dirty dog;
4. Skeleton in the cupboard.
These functions illustrate the PhUs’ role (function) in the sentence as subject, verb, object, attribute and adverbial modifier.
