259. Banking approach. Instead of communicating, the teacher issues communiqués and makes deposits which the students patiently receive, memorize, and repeat. This is the "banking" concept of education, in which the scope of action allowed to students extends only as far as receiving, filing, and storing the deposits. Banking approach. Freire (1968) introduced the 'banking' concept of education whereby he equated teachers with bank clerks and saw them as 'depositing' information into students rather than drawing out knowledge from individual students or creating inquisitive beings with a thirst for knowledge: 260. Teacher dominated approach The study determined the teachers’ dominant approaches used in teaching English as a second language and their influence on the grammatical skills of the high school students. The respondents of the study were the randomly sampled 2nd year and 3rd year high school students and English teachers of Liceo de Cagayan University. The study used the descriptive design using a researcher-made questionnaire that elicited data on the teachers’ approach in teaching the selected grammar lessons and the students’ level of grammar skillsThe students did poorly in subject-verb agreement and noun-adjective agreement, and well in verb tenses. Overall, the students did fairly in English grammar. 261. Classical method. The grammar-translation method (also known as the classical method) is a method of language teaching that emphasizes grammar rules and one-to-one vo- cabulary translation. Grammar rules are taught through presentation and explicit instruction. The grammar-translation method is probably the oldest method for teaching a foreign language in the West. Because its origins go back to the teaching of classical languages, it is also known as the classical method. The very boring-sounding method of language teaching described above is the Classical Method, also known as the Grammar Translation Method because it teaches grammar as a means to translate text from one language to the other. Grammar Translation classes are taught in the students’ native language, and they require students to memorize longlists of vocabulary and grammar rules, and to translate classical texts and other arbitrary sentences. The Direct Method: developed by Maximilian Berlitz around the 1880s, is based on the premise that a second language should be learned more like the first language. It uses a slow build-up of skills paired with a lot of vocabulary repetition in context to help students learn to communicate from the beginning. The Direct Method uses only the target language for instruction and builds up an arsenal of everyday vocabulary and sentences quickly without teaching grammar explicitly. The teacher teaches vocabulary through pictures, objects and elaborate pantomime, and the students figure out the grammar as they go, partially through imitation and partially by trial and error. 262.The traditional method. Traditional methods of teaching are a thing of the past in which teachers are the controller of the class where they teach and take complete responsibility for the learning environment. All the duties and powers are vested in the teacher and they, being the lecturer in the class, play the role of an instructor for the students and also the decision maker for taking the decision of what to teach and how to teach. In traditional teaching methods, classrooms are teacher-centric. Teachers are the main source of knowledge in the traditional method of teaching. They take the responsibility of knowledge dispensers, not the facilitators. In traditional teaching methods, chalk and talk methods are highly used. Regimented classrooms are the focus of the traditional method of teaching. As the traditional method of teaching is teacher-centric, it shows a lack of collaboration and group learning among students. Teachersgivelecturesandstudentslearn. In traditional teaching, the main motive of teachers is to prepare students for exams than teach them and make them understand the concept and syllabus. Students learn just to pass the exam and get good results. There is no proper alignment that can be seen between objectives, activities and assessments in traditional teaching. 263. Direct teaching approach. Direct instruction is where teachers use explicit teaching techniques to teach a specific skill to their students. This type of instruction is teacher-directed, where a teacher typically stands at the front of a room and presents information. There are two main approaches to instruction in higher education: teacher-centered and student-centered. Your approaches will significantly impact your students' learning experiences as well as their ability to understand new concepts and transfer knowledge. There are 5 different Pedagogical approaches, being the constructivist approach, the collaborative approach, the reflective approach, the integrative approach, and, finally, the inquiry-based approach. The direct method of teaching, which is sometimes called the natural method, and is often (but not exclusively) used in teaching foreign languages, refrains from using the learners' native language and uses only the target language. It was established in England around 1900 and contrasts with the grammar–translation method and other traditional approaches, as well as with C.J. Dodson's bilingual method. It was adopted by key international language schools such as Berlitz, Alliance Française and Inlingua in the 1970s and many of the language departments of the Foreign Service Institute of the U.S. State Department in 2012. 264. Research-based approach. Research-based teaching and learning is a constructivist-based approach to learning in which students learn through research. Instructors support this process by teaching in a way that does not present topics as closed, but rather opens them up for students to research. The RBL is a didactic technique that aims to connect the teachings in the classroom with techniques and research methodologies that allow students to develop competencies and analysis, reflection, and argumentation skills along with their training. 265. Problem-based approach in teaching. Problem-based learning (PBL) is a student-centered approach in which students learn about a subject by working in groups to solve an open-ended problem. This problem is what drives the motivation and the learning. For example, a problem-based learning project could involve students pitching ideas and creating their own business plans to solve a societal need. Students could work independently or in a group to conceptualize, design, and launch their innovative product in front of classmates and community leaders. The objectives of PBL system are; i) Self directed learning: Through tutorial sessions the students are taught to self-formulate their goals and objectives of learning of particular topics and then at the end of each session they are expected to evaluate the extent to which their goals are realized; ii) Problem solving . 266. Goals of teaching. The ultimate goal of teaching is to impart learning. Student's desire to learn is vital to mastering new concepts, principles, and skills. The goal of teaching is to make a desirable change in behaviour. Teaching is purposeful and goal-directed which ends at desired changes of learners' behaviour. 267. Designing materials for a foreign language lesson. The design of teaching materials requires the student teachers to take a set of decisions, make choices and explain the reasons for them. This practice will grant them some autonomy (in terms of taking responsibility for decision- making), and create opportunities (and the necessity) for reflection. Designing materials provide opportunities for teachers to explore and learn new information which takes shape in the form of tasks. 268. Demonstration method. A method demonstration is a teaching method used to communicate an idea with the aid of visuals such as flip charts, posters, power point, etc. A demonstration is the process of teaching someone how to make or do something in a step-by-step process. Desuggestopedia is an application of the study of suggestion to pedagogy. Desuggest is the opposite of suggest. It is used to eliminate the negative feeling and Suggestopedia is used to reinforce the positive feeling and to release the full mental power. Desuggestopedia has been called an affective-humanistic approach because there is respect for students' feelings. Desuggestopedia is used to teach English to students for whom it is not the home language. Students do not use their full powers of learning and they have some limitations in learning second language. 271. The discovery method. Discovery learning is an inquiry-based learning method that takes a constructivist approach to education, where students are encouraged to construct their own knowledge through a self-directed learning process—essentially “instructionless” learning. Discovery learning strategy is a strategy in which the students are not given the content of the lesson in the beginning of the study, but they have to find it by themselves through the six stages namely stimulation, problem statement, data collection, data processing, verification, and generalization. 272.Advantages of using different methods in the classroom. Teaching methods are the broader techniques used to help students achieve learning outcomes, while activities are the different ways of implementing these methods.
