Informant’s name: Gulchehra (Gulya) Work location: Mirzayev Institute, Tashkent province Interview location: Mirzayev Institute, Tashkent city Tissue culture lab visit Gulchehra (Gulya) is currently the only permanent lab employee in the Mirzaev’s Institute involved in innovative approach in cherry growing and also conducting in experiments with apricots, wall nuts brought from US. Gulya explained carefully all the steps of the production of plantlets which are grown into saplings through accelerated process. Using the equipment and reagents provided through USAID funding the lab. Most of the lab workers are women but there are other labs which might require more male employees. In production of the saplings (multiplication of plantlets) it would be more appropriate to have girls, however there are lab tasks where men’s force is needed. “I do not divide between whether guys or girls will be involved in the lab work, more important is their abilities and knowledge, the person should be chemist as the most important stage is preparation of the medium. I think women can do the same work as men in the lab if necessary accessibility and conditions are created” explained Gulya. . Not only the Mirzaev Institute staff could be involved, but specialist from other institutes could be attracted. It would be essential to maintain gender equality in terms of activities and salaries when it the lab will enter into the real world market and turn into an independent business. 1 | AVC UZBEKISTAN FY2019 QUARTER 3 REPORT USAID.GOV Appendix 4.
