46% are female students (Figure 8.). It can be highlighted that numbers of female students have declined 
in two faculties which seem to be become unpopular among female students: Agricultural production 
and Crop protection and quarantine and the faculty of Professional education in in agronomy. The 
interviewed professor of the Samarkand agrarian institute commented that unfortunately, students do 
not prefer to connect their job careers with agricultural sector after their graduation as they think that 
they will not earn good income. This creates a deficit of knowledgeable specialist in agricultural value 
chain activities.

In 2015 a new horticulture and grape production faculty was opened and 47 student were accepted 
and out of them 52% were female. However it is important to raise the motivation of students to work 
in agricultural sector as many of them only come to receive a diploma and are not at all interested in 
agriculture. From the words of the professor the student very often go into service sector, men often 
take a military path and female do not work at all in their professional directions after they get 
married. The main issue here could be simple lack of information about the possibilities and agricultural 
career path which can be rewarding and successful. The Institute seemed to lack to cover production to 
market linkages by concentrating only on the production side of the value chain.
