Analyzing Student Work

Focus on what is: What does the work show that the student has learned and can do?

Look beneath the surface: Think about student work as representing unconscious or conscious decisions about what should be and ask ourselves what has informed those decisions.

Ask questions: Student work can raise questions that yield valuable and often surprising insights about the relationship between teaching and learning.

Quality deserves to be captured: Student work is the discovery of exemplars (samples of student work that illustrate the standard we want students to attain) and anchors (samples of student work that illustrate different levels of performance.

Analyzing student work can result in the accurate and timely diagnosis of student needs.

A picture may be worth a thousand words, but, in education, information speaks volumes.
DATA ANALYSIS can provide a snapshot of what students know, what they should know, and what can be done to meet their academic needs. With appropriate analysis and interpretation of data, educators can make informed decisions that positively affect student outcomes.
And, when it comes to improving instruction and learning -
it’s not the quantity of the data that counts but how the information is used.

The number one job of a teacher is to be faithful to authentic student learning. Yes, standardized testing data (results from one test, from one day, given near the end of the school year) can be useful; however, we teachers spend the entire year collecting all sorts of immediate and valuable information about students that informs and influences how we teach, as well as where and what we review, readjust, and reteach.

3 Ways Student Data Can Inform Your Teaching
When data is interpreted effectively, it can be used to understand individual student needs and employ strategies to differentiate instruction.
DATA ANALYSIS helps teachers understand their students’ learning abilities and challenges and facilitates a process that uses detailed information to ensure optimal results for students.
