Grading Tips

  • Don’t grade everything: Determine what is worth or not worth going into the grade book. It’s OK to not grade an assignment or give credit for participation.
  • Cycle your feedback: Good teachers give good feedback; however, it is not necessary to give feedback on every student on every assignment.
  • Use technology wisely: Administering formative assessments like quizzes or exit slips via Google Forms, Edmodo or Kahoot can save you lots of grading time.
  • Don’t assign busywork: Only give students work that develops their skill set.
  • Use rubrics: Rubrics are a grading tool that provides students with assignment expectations before they even start. Grading becomes easier for teacher as a check is given for each expectation that is completed.
  • Grade whenever possible: It is acceptable to grade assignments while students are working independently; however, it must be done wisely. Always be aware of your class’ behavior, ask if anyone needs help, provide the necessary directions, and periodically circle the room. The children and their needs must come first!

STOP GRADING EVERYTHING … and focus on the art of grading what matters!
While the common thought process is that GRADING holds students accountable, the fact is that we can still hold students accountable without grading unnecessarily. Grading what matters–proof of student achievement–should be the main focus. Teachers can make the learning environment a place where students feel confident and the classroom a place where success happens.
