Methodology

Approach

This present research intends to use mix-method in approach, (both Quantitative and Qualitative). Both Quantitative and Qualitative will be given equal treatment.



Design

In order to have rich and comprehensive data for answering the research questions I will collect the data for both qualitative and quantitative using concurrent designs, ­(Triaingulation, Embedded). Methods to be employed in collecting the data include; the survey questionnaires, interviews, focus group discussions, video recordings, and observations using open-ended interviews, open-ended observations, documents and audiovisual materials for Qualitative. Meanwhile, measures such as, direct observation based on the standard observation instrument, and using sources such as instruments, checklist, public documents and questionnaire, will be used as regards to quantitative aspects of this research. The data for both Qualitative and Quantitative with be collected, analyzed and find out the results separately later the two will be compare and contrast and finally interpret the Quantitative plus Qualitative, (Triangulation design: Convergence model)

However, in order to obtain the language of instruction that primary 5 grades children understand better I will use experiment group and teach a particular topic to the same group using two different languages and conduct a test. in addition also, I will conduct an interview to hear the opinion of the pupils on their preferred language of instruction. The pupils’ preferred language of instruction will again, be assessed through lesson observation.

Open-ended interview, open-ended questionnaire, close-ended interview, close-ended questionnaire will be conducted to assess the parents’ preferred language of instruction in primary school. I intend to conduct a focus group discussion, Open-ended interview, open-ended questionnaire, close-ended interview, and close-ended questionnaire in order to assess the experts’ preferred language of instruction at primary 5 grades schools in Sokoto state Nigeria.

To measure pupils’ level of reading component skills I will use different methods of data collection such as recorded videos of individual pupil, conducting writing test, and interview on the reading ability of the every component of reading instruction thus: Phonological/Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Reading Fluency, Vocabulary, Comprehension, Concepts of Print and Writing. Pupils’ academic test results records will also be used to be compared with their level of reading skills.

Teachers will be assessed through a develop questionnaires, interviews, (Qualitative and Quantitative), to response on their preferred language of instruction at primary 5 grades schools in Sokoto state. To collect data, an approval letter from USM for collecting data from study participants should be applied. The information notice of the study purpose, consent form, survey questionnaires, and other relevant information will be publicized.
