noted that Malay was a lingua franca that had been in practice for a long time before the
arrival of the Portuguese. The content of this short article is to analyze the influence of the
Portuguese language on the Malay language and the influence of the Malay language on
the Portuguese language in the 16th century.
When the Portuguese arrived in Malacca, they found that Malacca was very
connected to the port cities of the Malay Archipelago. During this period, the main trade
centers were Pasay, Malacca, Johor, Patani, Aceh and Brunei Malay speaking areas. The
Malay language was so widely spoken that Malay was also dominant in the Indonesian
archipelago, and it was also widespread in the Central and Southern Philippines and as far
south as Paulo Condor near the coast of southern Vietnam. The Malay language attracted
great interest among Europeans in 1521 when the Italian Antonio Pigafetta arrived in
Malacca. This language attracted them so much that the people of that region were found
to be using the Malay language spoken in Malacca. Pigafetta, who had no education in
language and linguistics, used the help of a Sumatran linguist to compile a dictionary of
Malay words, and as a result, the first Malay dictionary was written. At the same time, he
emphasizes that the Eastern languages are the most polite and that knowing this language
is as necessary in India as French in the Netherlands. Even St. Francis Xavier wrote his
reflections on Christian teachings in Malay when he visited Malacca in the 16th century. In
fact, two letters were sent to the King of Portugal between 1521 and 1522 when the Sultan
of Ternate was fighting with the Sultan of Tidor for the favor of Portugal. the letter may have
been written by secretaries or courtiers who do not know the Malay language well. Letters
such as those written by the Sultan of Aceh to Queen Elizabeth of England in 1602 and to
King James in 1612 testify to the importance of Malay for communication in the Malay world
of Southeast Asia. However, it is worth noting that all the letters above do not use
Portuguese words. However, based on the letter of Birni Raja to the English captain in
Jambi, "Sejarah Melayu" and the later written "Hikayat Hang Tuah", we can assume that the
influence of Portuguese on the Malay language started as early as 1612. Below we will
analyze the words adopted from Portuguese to Malay.
