Given that the Portuguese ruled Malacca from 1511 to 1641, it is only natural that 
this dual vocabulary is involved. The presence of a mestizo or half-breed Portuguese 
community in Malacca today is further evidence of Portuguese movement over a long period

Malacca. 
The period of XVI-XVII centuries was really a new era of development of the Malay 
language. It was a time of rapid change for Southeast Asia. Anthony Reid calls this a period 
of commerce, in which the ports, especially of the Malayan world, were brought closer 
together by sea-to-city communication long before European settlement. This connection is 
strengthened by the adoption of Malay as the lingua franca of the introduction. When the 
Gauls came to fight against the Portuguese rule, the Malay language continued to adapt to 
European culture, absorbing many products from the Dutch language and English.
