Activity 12: Adapting & Extending Textbook Activities
Divide mentees into groups of 3. Choose 2 or 3 activities to adapt or extend from the Prepare textbooks.
Unit 3: Great Sounds, About You (Survey)

  1. Give each Mentee Handout: Great Sounds Survey.

    1. Ask Mentees to stand up.

    2. Mentees have 5 minutes to ask 5 friends the survey questions.

  2. Show Mentees the textbook activity in student book page 24 and the teacher’s instructions in teacher’s book page 45.

  3. Ask how we adapted the textbook activity and why we adapted it. (We made the activity a survey instead of a discussion. It is more engaging for students.)

Unit 5: Moments in History Grammar (Board Race)

  1. Draw 5 columns on the board.

  2. Label the columns: climb → _________, change → ______, carry → _______, stay → ______, stop → _________.

  3. Ask Mentees how we make each word past tense. Write the past tense in the chart: climb → climbed, change → changed, carry → carried, stay → stayed, stop → stopped

  4. Divide Mentees into groups of 3.

  5. Give each group a different color of sticky note.

  6. Use the words on student book page 37 to do a board race.

  7. Give instructions:

    1. I will say a word.

    2. Discuss the past tense of the word with your group.

    3. Write the word on the sticky note.

    4. Run to the board and stick the word under the correct column.

    5. The first group to spell the word correctly & put it into the column gets 2 points. Other teams who get the word correct get 1 point.

    6. Change writers and runners for each word.

  8. Read through the words on page 37. Make sure the writers and runners change with each word.

  9. Show Mentees student book page 37 and teacher’s instructions in the teacher’s book on page 70.

  10. Ask how we adapted the activity and why. (We did a board race instead of independent work. It’s more engaging for the student and students could support each other.)

Transition: We adapted 3 activities today. We adapted the jazz chant to fit Uzbek culture, we made the music discussion more engaging by creating a survey, and we helped students support each other in a difficult activity by doing a grammar group board race. Now it’s your turn to adapt or extend a textbook activity.
