The problems of English dictionary

CONCLUSION FOR CHAPTER II.
Having become acquainted with the history of the development of English lexicography, we examined the concept of the Soviet linguist Academician L.V. Shcherba, who believed that the "compilation" of dictionaries should be of a scientific nature and in no way consist in a mechanical comparison of some ready-made elements. We also found out that lexicography has two sides: scientific-theoretical and practical-applied. These two sides of lexicography always go together, they are closely interconnected.
When studying the history of the origin of dictionaries, we found out that lexicography is an independent scientific discipline that has its own subject of study, its scientific and methodological principles, its own theoretical problems, its place among other sciences of language.
Having considered the place and role of the dictionary in the modern system of English lexicography, we can conclude that English-language dictionaries have a teaching orientation, starting from the early stages of the development of English lexicography to the present day. It was G. Cockerman's dictionary that became the prototype of dictionaries of word usage and was called upon to reveal the exemplary norms of the literary language.
There are three periods in the history of educational lexicography of the English language:
1. from glossaries (VII - VIII centuries) to the explanatory dictionary of S. Johnson;
2. from the first American dictionaries (XIX century) to those specially created in the 30s of the XX century. educational and explanatory dictionaries focused on a foreign user;
3. from lexical minima to whole series of educational and explanatory dictionaries designed for different levels of education of readers.
The typology of dictionaries makes it possible to classify lexicographic publications according to the following parameters: by language; lexicographic form; addressee; size; vocabulary completeness and format. This classification reflects the state of modern educational dictionaries and can be used in compiling new reference books.
Being a part of the science of language, gradually, step by step, lexicography takes shape as an independent linguistic discipline and becomes equal among other linguistic sciences.
Work on this course work contributed to familiarization with the theory and practice of compiling dictionaries, with a variety of dictionaries of various types, many of which, for various reasons, did not come into use by philologists and methodologists, as well as a deeper study of phraseological dictionaries of the English language.
