3.3. Illustrative examples.Selection of adequate equivalents.
Vocabulary-semantic exercises (vocabulary work) are a means of updating semantized words. There are two groups of exercises: exercises aimed at consolidating the meaning of a semantized word in the memory of students, and exercises aimed at developing the ability to use these words in their own speech. When consolidating the understanding of the meaning of a semantized word, schoolchildren must be taught to formulate the lexical meaning of a word, determine the meaning of a word according to the context, and select the words that make up the semantic field of a given word. In accordance with these goals, the following types of vocabulary-semantic exercises are used: 1) recording an interpretation of the lexical meaning of a word (or reading this interpretation); 2) selection of interpretations of their lexical meaning for given words; 3) recognition of a word by its interpretation; 4) compiling a dictionary entry of a polysemantic word; 5) definition in the context of differences in the meaning of words that are somewhat similar to each other and different meanings of a polysemantic word; 6) selection of words related to one semantic topic, lexico-semantic group, related words, synonyms, antonyms, generic or specific word. Solving the problems of actualization of semantized words, students need to learn the compatibility of words depending on their meanings, compiling contexts that would allow a certain meaning of a word to appear, finding and correcting lexical errors and shortcomings. To achieve these goals, the following types of exercises are used: 1) composing phrases; 2) drafting proposals; 3) the use of semantized words in presentations and essays; 4) finding lexical errors and shortcomings and correcting them. When teaching how to compose phrases and sentences in which the word must appear in a certain meaning, it is advisable to rely on samples that were previously selected or compiled by the teacher. Schoolchildren must be taught to find the following types of lexical errors and shortcomings: semantically incorrect use of a word; violation of the lexical compatibility of the word; use of a non-literary word; unjustified repetition of the same words and words with the same root.
