Module 8 Part-1

Summary of Approaches:

  • The TPR method focuses on the teacher using their body to demonstrate, mime and act out language as students learn it. It is rooted in the belief that when action is combined with language, learning is boosted. This can be especially useful for younger learners and is a preferred method for some online teaching platforms. However, it isn't really suitable for teaching adults and is limited in its scope to younger learners at lower levels of language acquisition. Note that TPR was also never intended to be a stand-alone teaching method. It is ideally used in combination with other methods.
  • Can you remember what 'TPR' stands for?

Summary of Approaches:

  • PPP (presentation – practice – production)
  • TBL – Task-based learning
  • Grammar focus (ex. Noun, etc.)
  • Skills focus (Listening, speaking, etc.)
  • Phonological approach
  • Communicative approach
  • Lexical approach
  • TPR

Skills & Language Systems Approaches

  • Before you start writing your lesson plan, it's important you have a clear idea of the main focus of the lesson as this will influence the shape your plan will take.
  • Are you teaching skills or language systems?

Skills or language systems

  • Skills (Productive):_______________
  • Skills (Receptive):________________
  • Language system:________________
  • Pronunciation and discourse are also language systems but as these are usually integrated into skills or grammar/vocabulary lessons, we will focus on the above.

Identifying the Lesson Focus

  • Let's look at more examples below. What's the focus of the lesson? Think about:
  • Are they skills or language systems?
  • If they are skills, is it a receptive skill or productive skill? Which one?
  • If they're language systems, is the main focus grammar or vocabulary?

What's the focus of the lesson?

  • Responding to an informal email to a friend.
  • Teaching learners how to use the past simple tense/comparatives/the first conditional.
  • Understanding a weather forecast on the radio.
  • Practising for a job interview.
