English for Academics Teachers Guide Book 2

5 Encourage learners to explain why they write or have
written articles of a certain type.
Learners’ own answers.
Reading
6 This activity is aimed at reading for gist. Encourage
learners to identify what type of academic publication it is
and ask to justify their point of view.
Suggested answers
Title 3 is the most appropriate title because it mentions media
representation, depression and young people. (Title 1 focuses on
newspapers as a source to identify depression which is not the
research problem. Title 2 focuses only on one of the themes of
research.)
This is an abstract of a research article. It cannot be a full article
because it is too short.

5 Tell learners that Text 2 is also an abstract. Focus on
the first word in Text 1 and the definition that follows, and
make sure everyone understands the meaning of ‘grazing’.
Later in Module 2 learners will analyse other parts of
these articles. Ask learners to choose the correct verbs
and check their answers. Then ask learners to put the
verbs in the correct tense.
