Chinchillas are slightly tiny animals looking like squirrels, and are native to the Andes
mountains in South America. The chinchilla is named after the Chincha people of the Andes, who once wore velvet-like fur. People love to have chinchillas as pets because they are extremely soft. Their fur is thick and feels like velvet. Its fur can be up to 80 times as thick as other animals. Unfortunately, because chinchillas’ fur is so soft to touch, many people try to use chinchillas’ fur to make clothing and blankets. Chinchillas’ fur also comes in many different colours, which makes it even more desirable. Chinchillas have a long life span and can live up to 20 years. Chinchillas can sometimes be difficult to own, however. They are soft, so you have to be careful while holding them. Chinchillas are largely n o c tu r n a l, which means they will be most active at night. You must be gentle to gain the trust of a chinchilla. It can take some time to get any chinchilla used to your hands. So if you plan to own a chinchilla, be patient.
