Pre-speaking stage: What country were you born in? What are some famous dishes from your country? What country were you born in? While-speaking stage: Giving students a handouts about the topic ( worksheets, flashcards) Application of Communicative Language Teaching Some pre-class preparations 1.1 The Materials 1. Textual materials A typical session includes a theme, a task analysis, a practice situation description for thematic development, a stimulus presentation, comprehension questions, and paraphrase exercises. 2. Material based on a task To supplement Communicative Language Teaching sessions, a range of games, role plays, simulations, and task-based communication activities have been developed. Genuine Materials Many supporters of Communicative Language Teaching have argued for the use of “authentic” or “real-life” materials in the classroom. Language-based realia, such as signs, magazines, advertising, and newspapers, as well as graphic and visual materials, can be used to construct communicative activities. 2.1. Procedures Fincocchiaro and Brumfit once proposed the following communicative procedures: 1.A brief dialogue is presented, followed by a motivation and description of the purpose and situation—people, roles, place, topic, and language informality. Oral rehearsal of each utterance in the dialog segment. Questions and replies based on the topics of the conversation and the scenario itself. Questions and answers focusing on the conversation theme but related to the students’ personal experiences. Examine one of the dialog’s basic communicative expressions or one of the structures that exemplifies the function. Discovering generalizations or rules underlying the functional expression or structure by learners. Activities involving spoken recognition and interpretation. Activities involving oral production. A sample of the written homework assignment, if one is provided. Conclusion In conclusion, teaching speaking is an essential aspect of language learning and development. The ability to communicate effectively through spoken language is crucial for personal, academic, and professional success. Through speaking, individuals can express their thoughts and ideas, connect with others, and engage in meaningful interactions. Effective speaking skills can also enhance one’s confidence, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities. Therefore, it is important for language teachers to design and implement effective speaking activities and assessments that cater to the needs and abilities of their learners. By providing ample opportunities for practice, feedback, and reflection, language teachers can help their learners develop their speaking skills and become proficient communicators in their target language.
