Figures

In research reports two types of figures are used:

• 
  Charts or diagrams
  
• 
  Schematic representations
  

Charts offer a useful way of describing the size or strength of variables in relation to each other. ‘Bar charts’ and ‘Line charts’ use a vertical and a horizontal axis to present data.

  Vertical axis represents the unit of measurement and
  
• 
  Horizontal axis the grouping variables

Schematic representations offer a useful way to describe complex relationships between multiple variables and typically utilize various boxes and arrows.


Tables

Tables are used to summarize large amounts of data about the respondents and responses and to present results of statistical analyses. They are typically made up of rows and columns of numbers each marked with headings and subheadings. They can provide a more accurate and richer description than figures but they are less digestible.
