that the “dream” of being a model is a program we give young girls as a
way for them to feel of value. For me it was
ANTM that gave me that
program and leaves me wondering if I had been able to watch a show about
female entrepreneurs, would I have wanted
to be a CEO or start my own
business earlier vs. being a model?
What inspired you to start Healthy is the New Skinny?
After working in the modeling business and realizing that it does not come
as advertised, I realized that I was valued more when I was unhealthy.
When I was 200 pounds and a size fourteen, working as a plus-sized model,
I worked the most even though it was not a natural weight for my size. Now
I am 165 pounds and totally fit and healthy
and would need to lose over
fifty pounds to be a “straight size” model. That made no sense to me and I
started to look into it more. I started asking questions like, “Why aren’t
models allowed to be healthy?” I would talk to all kinds of models and they
all have the same complaints. No matter what size they are they are always
told to lose weight. I even fell into that trap after losing forty pounds in a
healthy way and being told I was “too small for plus size.” I tried to get
small enough to try straight size modeling and it was physically impossible
for my body. That is when I started to look at the affect this “skinny ideal”
was having on girls and women as a whole. I knew I had to do something to
change it and so I created Healthy is the New Skinny.
