Girl Code by Cara Alwill Leyba (1)

Tell us a bit about yourself.
I am a Los Angeles and New York City girl, an entrepreneuress at heart
with a passion for traveling, art and interiors. I was raised in Austin, Texas
by a Hungarian/Spanish family, so I grew up with a European influence,
which inspired me to skip the typical American dream and chase my own
dreams.
What inspired you to start The Decorista?
My grandfather and I were very close and he always wanted me to be a
writer. He was a writer, photographer, and super creative and he felt I got
his genes. When he passed away, I knew I had to start writing somehow but
I didn’t know how on Earth I could be a writer, so I went to school for
design. So, after watching the movie Julie & Julia, I decided to write a blog
about interior design.
What is The Decorista mission statement and where did it come from?
The mission of my blog evolved over the years. Once I started it, I became
obsessed with online media. I would stay up every night till 3 am reading
other blogs, learning how to code, what the term SEO was, etc. After seeing
what so many others were doing, and not doing, I was inspired by what
wasn’t out there. There were so many blogs about decorating and design,
but none about what I wanted to talk about: the art of domestic bliss and a
glamorous lifestyle. I just knew that my voice needed to be out there. After
a few years of fine-tuning my voice – which comes from consistent writing

– I realized that my mission statement is to help people love where they
live. I am a firm believer that your life reflects your home and the way you
live reflects your current life.
How do you handle fear?
Well, I will start by saying; I am very spiritual girl. I have always believed
in a greater power. I believe that thoughts become things and I always
remember that what we think, we see. So, I do my best to battle those
sneaky little thoughts that tell you lies. As a Christian, we recite scriptures
to implant positive words in our minds. I also say affirmations daily to
remind myself to stand by my beliefs in positive thoughts. It’s very easy to
let fear run the game, but I am determined to not let it get me down. That’s
a promise I made myself, once I committed to self-love.
