After surviving one of the worst genocides in the history I felt compelled to
be a voice for those who were killed and
those who are unable for one
reason or another to tell about their experiences.
What is your personal mission statement?
My mission is to raise awareness about women issues especially in conflict
situations when rape is used extensively as a weapon against women and to
try to prevent this from happening anywhere in the world in the future.
Tell us about your book and what inspired that
My book
Tested To The Limit: A Genocide Survivor’s Story of Pain,
Resilience and Hope is about my life experiences prior to, during and after
the 1994 genocide against Tutsis in Rwanda. It details some of the horrible
things that were done to me, my family and
hundred thousands of other
Tutsis in my country by people who were intent to exterminate our ethnic
group. It also details my struggles with issues to my being raped and
infected with HIV and how I was able to maintain a positive outlook on life
and preserve my faith and hopefulness for my life.
How did you conquer fear when putting your book out there?
It took me a long time to be able to overcome
the fear of being further
victimized by some of the very people who were responsible for
perpetrating the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. However,
over the passage of
time, with therapy and other forms of self-healing I was able to overcome
that fear and instead use it to motivate me to expose the atrocities I have
experienced by writing about it.
