Girl Code by Cara Alwill Leyba (1)

What is your morning routine?
I’m quite the night owl – the nighttime is my chance to catch up on things
while my family sleeps – so my daily sleep schedule is more like taking
“naps!” My mornings usually start with emails and text messages, and then
I spend a little time with my children and husband before we all part ways
for about half of the day. No matter what the day holds, I try to kick things
off with a positive spirit.
How do you handle fear?
I channel my inner Beyoncé and let my passion trump my fear. You know
how they say “feel the fear and do it anyway?” Fear isn’t real. Yes, it’s a

feeling, but it’s not a tangible thing – and with positive thinking and action,
we can be fearless. We have to remind ourselves of that every day. I think
most of the time, the fear we feel is a fear of failure. But failure is an
opportunity. We should be appreciative, not fearful, of failure because such
great things come out of it. Each failure means we’re a step closer to
success. And in those moments when doubt creeps in, I have such a strong
support system of family and friends to build me up. I encourage all of you
to really look around and make sure you’re surrounding yourselves with
positive, encouraging and supportive people. They will remind you of how
powerful you are and how incredible living fearlessly can be.
What inspires you?
All of the powerful, passionate women around the world inspire me every
day. Lots of people can do something amazing, but I truly admire the
women who have been knocked down and still got back up. These women
learn from their experiences. They simply refuse to give up. There’s such
beauty in that kind of determination and dedication, and I’m so inspired by
it.
How do you stay motivated?
I try to always remember my main goal, the big picture, why I started in the
first place. I feel like the journey is always hardest right before the peak. If
you can look at where you started and how far you’ve come, you’ll have the
motivation you need to reach the top. Personally, I like to create vision
boards and collect inspiring quotes. They’re my little reminders of why I’m
doing what I’m doing, even in those times when I’m feeling overwhelmed
or impatient. My husband and my children also motivate me. I see how
much excitement my children have when they wake up to start the day or
when they learn something new. I see how hard my husband works for his
dreams and how hard he’s worked to get to where he is today. We all
motivate each other. That’s what family is for. My girlfriends and I make an
effort to stay close as well. Whether we’re near or far in distance, we keep

our group chats filled with humor and love to remind each other how much
we care for one another. We are all so lucky.
