Your Vibe Attracts Your Tribe
My friend Rachel Luna said it best: if you think girls suck, you’re
hanging out with the wrong ones. I’ve heard so many women say they don’t
have girlfriends, and they get along better with men. That’s sad to me,
because when confident, happy, secure women come together in friendship,
amazing things happen.
I encourage you to really look around at the company you keep. Who
are the women in your life? Are they supportive? Do they empower you?
Do they listen to you? Do they have your best interest at heart? If the
answer is no then it’s time to let them go. You can build new friendships at
any age. Just because someone has been in your life for a long time doesn’t
mean they get a free pass to stay forever. It sounds harsh, but it’s your
precious life and energy we’re talking about here, and you’ve got to work
relentlessly at protecting both. Never give someone the power to have a
negative impact on either of those things.
Making friends as an adult can seem overwhelming, but if you are
open-minded, it’s actually fun. I’ve made some of my best friends over the
past five years. As we grow into self-possessed women, we become clearer
on our values and our passions. We develop more confidence, and we
recognize the kind of people we want to be around. Think of making new
girlfriends like dating. Make a list of qualities you’re looking for in new
friends. I know it may sound cheesy, but it works. Then, take a look around
at the women in your industry – whether you find them online or at local
networking events – and start asking people out on girl dates. Grab a cup of
coffee or a glass of champagne and see who you click with. I guarantee
you’ll have some “love at first sight” moments and those women will
become wonderful additions to your world.
