It is bou n ded on the N orth by the N orth ern and N orth C entral P r o v in c e s , on the E ast by the C entral and Saba ra ga m u w a P r o v in c e s , on the South by the S abaragam u w a and S ou th ern P ro v in c e s, and on the W est by the sea. P op u la tion 1,739,028. C oth olics 275,441. E a r l y H is t o r y . The C ath olic Faith was first preach ed in Ceylon by the) F ra n cis ca n s. O d oric de P ord en o n e , a F r a n cis ca n , v isited Ceylon in 1323 and baptised m any id ola ters. A fte r 1500, the Faith spread ra p id ly , and the tow n o f C olom bo and sur- ro u n d in g s w ere erected in to a d ioce se , and D on Juan de M on teiro was crea ted first Bishop o f C olom b o. This prelate rece iv e d in to the C h u rch Don Ju an D harm a- pala, the g ra n d son o f the C in g alese K in g B u w enekabah u V I I .
This p r in ce su cceed e d in 1542. Six years a fte r his a c c e ssio n C olom bo con ta in ed a C a th olic p op u la tion o f 12,000 w ith 2 parishes. O ur L a d y ’ s and St. L a w re n ce ’ s, 4 monaster* ies or co n v e n ts u n der the C ord eliers, D om in ica n s, A u g u s ti- n ian s, and C a pu ch in s and a C ollege c o n d u c te d by the Jesu its. By the y ear 1597, the P ortu g u ese had b ecom e m asters o f the w hole islan d, e x ce p t the K in g d o m o f K an d y. But, after 1600 the D utch a r r iv e d in the islan d, and a fte r a stru g g le o f m ore than 50 years th ey su cceed ed in o b ta in in g p ossession o f all the te rrito ry held b y the P ortu gu ese. 3 6 8 C o l o m b o . C olom bo fell in 1656 and Jaffna in 1658. In 1642 the D utch had mr.de a treaty with the K in g o f K m d y by w bieh all p rie sts, fr ia r s and clerg y m en wdre banished from C eylon , A m ore severe p ersecu tion fo llo w e d , where h a rb o u rin g a p riest w as con sid ered a capital offetrce. This lasted till the a rriva l o f the E n g lish . In 1796 C olom bo Fell to the pow er o l B ritain and in 1806 an A c t was passed r e p e a lin g all the D utch laws a g a in s t C a th olics. D u rin g the D utch period the ec cle s ia s tica l a d m in istra tion had been in the bands o f the B ish op o f C och in. The Islan d con tin u ed su b je ct io the B ish op ric o f C ochin till 1836, when G reg o ry X V I erected it in to a V ica ria te A p o s to lic . It was d ivided in 1843 into tw o V ic a r ia t e s , viz., C olom bo and Jaffna ; in 1853. the Central P r o v in c e was severed from C olom bo to form the V ica ria te o f K a n d y. B y the C on stitu tion Humanae Salutis Auctor o f Septem ber 1, 1886, C olom bo was e rected in to an A r ch ié p isc o p a l See with Jaffua and K a n d y as Saffra ga iis. B y a B r ie f o f L eo X I I I , A u g u st 26, 1893, tw o new d io ce se s w ere erected , the D iocese o f T rin com â lee, com p r isin g the E astern P r o v in c e and the D is trict o f Tam an kadu w a in the N orth Central P r o v iu c e , and the D iocese o f G alle, co m p osed o f the Southern P r o v in c e , and the P r o v in c e o f S abarn gam u w s. B esides, the N orth -W estern P r o v in c e w as detach ed from the D iocese o f Ja ffn a to be annexed to the A r ch d io c e s e o f Colom bp. F ra n cis X a v ie r , a n ative o f G oa, and at the time S u p erior o f the C eylon M ission , died 1835. V in c e n t De R o z a r io , B ish op o f T h om acen e, V ic a r A p o s to lic o f C olom bo, ap poin ted 1836, c o n secra ted 1837, died at C olom bo on A p r il 2 9 ,1 8 4 2 . D r. Bra v], a S ilv estrin e m on k, was ap p oin ted C o-a d ju to r to B ish op Caetano A n to n io , w hom he su cce e d e d as V ic a r A p o s to lic on Ja n u a ry 25* 1857.
