H i s t o r y . The C a th olic faith in Jaffna m ust have been in tro d u ce d soon after 1500. In 1547, the K adeyars o f the island o f M anaar, liv in g at a pla ce called Patim sen t a p r e s s in g inviia* tion to St. F ra n cis X a v ie r to baptise them. S t.. F ra a g is X a v ie r sent them one priest who baptized all those who presen ted them selves. But the K in g o f Jaffna, h av in g heard o f these c o n v e rs io u s sent im m ediately soldiers to put every* th in g in these v illa g es to fire and sw ord. Thus a b o u t 700, or a c c o r d in g to other a ccou n ts 400 new con v erts tog e th er with the priest w ere ruthlessly m assacred. In 1518 St. F ra n cis X a v ie r visited Patim on his way to St. Thotnae o f M ylapore. In 1580, u nder P o rtu g u ese p ro te ctio n , the first C ath olic C hurch w as bu ilt in Jaffna. In 1591, the w hole peninsula su rren dered to A n drea F u rtado de M endoza. S u b sequ en tly alm ost the en tire pop u la tion a b ju red id olatry and em b ra ced the C ath olic Faith. In 1686, V en erable Father J osep h V a z cam e to Jaffna* where he fou n d the C a th olic r e lig io n p re scrib e d by the Dutch Qftlvinists a p d lender p e rsecu tion . In 1699, several ora toria n s ca m e to bis help and his su ccess was so great that M gr. de T ou rn on , the papal legate, c on ceiv e d the idea o f e r e ctin g Ceylon in a d io cese with Fr. V az as B ish op, but the latter dissu aded him from this. Jaffna rem ained under the ju r is d ictio n o f C och in till 1845 when Ceylon was d iv id e d into 2 V ica ria te s : C olom bo and Jaffna, B ishop H ora tiu s B ettacbin i was the 1st V ic a r A p o s to lic o f Jaffna. In 1847 the O blates o f M ary Im m aculate cauie to Ceylon and in 1857 the V ica ria te was handed ov er to them.
