3. The Carmelite Nuns, fou nded by Fr. C oeu rdoux , S.J., in 1750, de vote d ex clu sively to the c ontem pla tiv e life, have two Convents, one in P o n d ic h e r ry , 19 profess ed and 7 n o vic e s and one in K a r ik a l, 16 pr ofessed. The Sisters o f the H oly and Immaculate H eart o f M ary, an In dia n C on g reg ation, fou nded in 1844, under the rules o f the Thir d R e g u la r Order o f St. F ran cis o f Assisi, fo r the ed u cation o f Indian girls. The n ovit ia te is in P o n d ic h e r ry ; and there are 37 Convents, o f which 19 are in this D iocese, 13 in the Dio ce se o f K u m ba k o n am , 4 in the D io cese o f Quilo n and 1 in Madras.
