Translation of infinitival constructions

One of them is a syntactic structure, called Accusative with the Infinitive, with the causative meaning, introduced by the verbs to have or to get,

For example, “I shall have him do it.”, “I shall have him punished.” When a translator has handle these structures, a specific problem emerges.

  1. The translator has to decide which Russian causative verb should be used as a substitute for the English have or get. The first example can rendered into Russian as “Я заставлю (прикажу, велю, распоряжусь) его сделать это” or “Я добьюсь (позабочусь, устрою так), чтобы он это сделал.”

  2. The translator must be aware that such complexes are polysemantic and may be either causative or non-causitive. The phrase “The general had his horse killed.” may refer to two different situations. Either the horse was killed at the general’s order (Генерал приказал убить свою лошадь.) or it was killed in combat (Под генералом убили лошадь.)

Thus, an error in the translation may lead to a complete distortion of meaning.

There are many other specifically English structures which are usually covered in the courses of theoretical and practical English grammar, since English and Russian are typologically different languages (analytical and synthetical).

Here are some examples which we want you translate and to determine the type of the structure and the related translational difficulties.
