The third is The Input Hypothesis
According to the Input Hypothesis, there is only one way for humans to learn language is through comprehension of messages or other forms of "comprehensible input. It is connected to The Natural Order Hypothesis by understanding the input and the next stage structures. There are two results of this Hypothesis. The first one is speaking and the next one is grammar. Speaking is prepared by comprehending and the required grammar will automatically be provided if the input is understood and sufficient Speaking topic: Making plans for the upcoming weekend. Grammar topic: be going to Steps of the lesson: Warm up activity ask them what they want to do at the weekend and they say only words or maybe some phrases. Bring a useful text about planning weekend, highlight the forms of “be going to” students task is only to read the given text and analyze it. Then they say what they find from the text. It can be forms of be going to or some new vocabulary. It is up to the learners critical thinking After that they comprehend and start to speak about what they are going to do at the weekend to their peers. Tell them to prepare their speech about weekend the next lesson they will present it to the whole class. Justification: To transfer this hypothesis into practice I decided to teach speaking by beforehand prepared visual aids. But I never teach grammar rules to my learners with some patterns Instead of it I prefer to lead them speaking activity. Comprehension helps my learners not only use accurate grammar but also provide them useful speaking activity. If communication is intended to be comprehensible it is not deliberate language teaching. As you know, my second learner has fear to speak because of the correct usage of grammar while his grammar knowledge is very high. This activity is implied to teach his speaking by inductive way. From the text he can easily identify the grammar topic and the only task is to speak. As you see my learner can be able to speak without hesitation because in class he has 3 chances to talk and communicate with his partners. We should take silent period into consideration because of this reason I gave them not only one speaking task but also 3 more. Because Krashen(1983)said that it is very noticeable in SLA(p. 87).Second language production does not emerge several months but it is usual. It takes some time. Furthermore in the video Krashen gives her Japanese neighbor as an example in silent period. He starts to teach English to his neighbor’s daughter by The Input Hypothesis. He talks to her on a daily basis but the first, second, third, even fourth months she do not reply or respond to him. But at the end, she firstly starts to speak a word, some words, used phrases and sentences as well. Finally she is nearly able to speak other native children in the neighborhood. In conclusion, it may take so much time to comprehend the input however it brings the best outcomes to SLA. |
