independent thinkers." The class leader should be well aware of and apply the teaching methods.
With the help of methods, a teacher's work is much easier and more efficient. students do not feel
bored. Discipline cannot be separated from education.

THE ROLE OF MOTIVATION IN TEACHING MIXED ABILITY CLASSES

Mixed ability teaching is related to working with students who have different personalities,
skills, interests and learning needs. Though most classes are usually multi-level, teachers (especially
those with little or no experience), find teaching such classes a very difficult and demanding task.
The differences which cause problems in such classes are in language learning ability, language
knowledge, cultural background, learning style, attitude towards language, mother tongue,
intelligence, world knowledge, learning experience, knowledge of other languages, age, gender,
personality, confidence, motivation, interests, and educational level. However, these variations may
occur in different degrees in different classes. Thus, if the teacher wants to ensure that all students
perform to their maximum potential, the teacher must identify these problems and deal with them
properly. The field of interest of this work is methodology, motivation, specifically teaching mixed
ability classes and creating materials for such classes. The choice of the field and topic is attracted
me because it is tough but interesting theme. And I guess that, I will write the work with pleasure
without any difficulties.
In mixed level classes, the students have come from the different schools, colleges, or
lyceums. That is why, their mixed level of knowledge regarding English is among other things a
result of two factors. Firstly, English has not been a compulsory part of the secondary school-
leaving exam yet, thus the students who did not choose English as their exam subject had probably
been much less motivated to pay attention to it during the studies. These students tend to show a
weaker performance in the class. Secondly, the state form of the school-leaving exam which would
unite the level of the knowledge needed for passing this exam is still only a suggestion in the
process of testing. So, a part of the students coming to the course have passed the same exam, they
have done so at different schools and consequently the level of these students´ English varies
greatly. In such situations, motivation is one of the most important aspects.
It is clear that, one of the most complex aspects of becoming a teacher is learning how to
motivate your students. It is also one of the most crucial. Students who are not motivated will not
learn effectively. They won’t retain information, they won’t participate and some of them may even
become disruptive. A student may be unmotivated for a variety of reasons: They may feel that they
have no interest in the subject, find the teacher’s methods un-engaging or be distracted by external
forces. It may even come to light that a student who appeared unmotivated actually has difficulty
learning and is need of special attention. While motivating students can be a difficult task, the
rewards are more than worth it. Motivated students are more excited to learn and participate. For
instance, teaching a class full of motivated students is enjoyable for teacher and student alike. Some
students are self-motivated, with a natural love of learning. But even with the students who do not
have this natural drive, a great teacher can make learning fun and inspire them to reach their full
potential.
All in all, as a teacher, our aim is to reach all of our students. However, it is well -known
that every student has a different way of learning, and learns and progresses at different speeds.
Thus, while some students may find the learning task very easy to deal with, others may find it
difficult to understand. Besides, learning also depends on what students have brought with them
into class. Since each comes from a different family, a different environment and/or a different
nation, the multi-cultural population of the classroom may be an obstacle for the teachers in
reaching the students, which eventually results in ineffective learning. Moreover, although it is quite
difficult for the teacher to know about each student and to follow what each one does during the
lessons even in small classes, it is important for teachers to monitor each and every student and to
reach their needs in a variety of ways to achieve effective teaching.
