Interactive Game
After the introductory video, students will play the game Curious George’s Animal Scrapbook to practice grouping animals based on observable features. This is an interactive game in which students are prompted to help Curious George complete his animal scrapbook by grouping animals based on matching features. In the game, the students will see four animal pictures displayed on the screen. One animal is drawn in George’s journal and the other three are shown below it. The students will be prompted by the narrator, the man in the yellow hat, to help George select an animal to match the one already drawn in his journal based on a shared feature. In one example, George has drawn a grasshopper and students are prompted to select another animal that lays eggs. They must choose from a sheepdog, a blue jay, and a dolphin. Students will access the game after watching the introductory video. Collaborative Journal Experience Students will participate in a shared journal experience in which they will choose at least one animal to upload in their online journal. Students can choose to draw, take a video, or snap a picture of the animal(s) they wish to upload in their journal. Students will also need to label the observable features of their animal(s). Students will make connections by viewing journal posts from their classmates and discussing the similarities and differences of the features among the different animals. For example, a student might recognize that their drawing of an elephant could be grouped with a classmate’s drawing of a hippopotamus because both of these animals are large (SKL1b – size). Seesaw the learning journal is an online application that will be utilized for this collaborative journal experience. This app allows students to choose from a variety of media tools to complete their entries, which supports student preference. Students will be able to share feature descriptions and comment on the work of their classmates by utilizing the voice-to-text or voice recording options within the app. These options are developmentally appropriate for kindergarten students because they eliminate the necessity for proficiency in reading and writing.
