Scaffolds for Diverse Learners
If a student is unable to identify an animal and/or label the features independently, one-on-one assistance will be provided. Students will explore the scaffolding resources (listed below) and choose an animal from one of these sources. The teacher will then provide one of the following:

  • A picture of the animal already labeled with observable features

  • A picture of an animal with lines indicating which observable features the student needs to label

Resources:

Introduction: teacher introductory video

Activities: technology devices (iPads, and Chromebooks)

Concluding Activity: animal pictures, zoo map/layout, glue, evaluation rubrics

Scaffolds: modified pictures for students to utilize in order to participate in the collaborative journal experience

Scaffolding Resources:
Videos
Animal Parts
Animals: Body Words
Classifying Animals

Assessment:
Interactive Game (Self-Assessment)
The Curious George game can be utilized as a self-assessment for students to check their understanding, because it is an interactive game that provides immediate feedback based on student responses.
Collaborative Journal Experience (Teacher, Self, and Peer-Assessment)
Student entries and participation in the shared journal experience will also be assessed. The teacher will use evidence from this activity to measure understanding by evaluating student ability to label the features of the animal(s) they selected to upload in their journal. In addition, the teacher can assess student ability to group animals based on observable features by examining the discussions between students and the connections they make during this shared journal activity.
This activity also affords students with an opportunity to self and peer-assess. By viewing other student products as well as interactions between classmates, students can check to see if their own understanding matches that of their peers. In addition, students can comment on the work of others to identify features or connections that were overlooked.
