Dr. David Smith - How To Quit Porn (2nd Edition)
Firstly, many more people are becoming aware of the sufferings that porn and unhealthy sexual behavior can cause both physically and mentally (remember these are closely tied together). We hope this awareness will only spread over time. People around the world are more open and willing to discuss these struggles in online forums. There are many support groups and people willing to act as mentors to those dealing with difficulties. Though times may be difficult now, know that in many ways the world is becoming a better place. Reading this far has already meant that you have taken this issue seriously. Congratulate yourself on taking this step forward in your journey towards a better life. Remember to enjoy the process and congratulate yourself on any and all small victories along the way. Addiction is hard to beat. It seems to adapt into new forms. At the beginning, when you become stronger and smarter at resisting urges, it seems that the addiction takes on a new form and there is no way to get ahead of it. But with repeated practice, the addiction can be mastered and tamed, as you become more aware on how to handle just about everything that it throws at you. This is similar to a video game, where at the beginning you struggle to just stay in it, yet by the end you achieve competence and mastery, undaunted by challenges with your strength and experience. There is one critical distinction between a porn addiction and a drug/alcohol addiction, or any other forms of addiction. You can transform an addiction to porn into a much healthier form by having sex the way that nature intended. In effect, this removes the desire to descend back into past behaviors if you approach this correctly. Once you have a healthy sex life, you can enjoy what you have and never have to go back to your past state. You don’t have to worry for the rest of your life that you will fall back into the same patterns and routine of ugly habits. Occasional relapses may happen, but as long as they are of very infrequent occurrence, they probably won’t detract from your long-term positive trend. While an alcoholic must be ever vigilant, as having even one drink could send them down a slippery slope, in general a sex addict has a different set of outcomes ahead of them. As time passes, the idea of watching porn becomes increasingly unappealing and leaves one with only disgust instead of arousal. At a certain point, you will know that the spell of porn has broken and that you prefer reality so much more than what porn has created. Normal sex becomes more and more interesting and fulfilling, and you will become noticeably happier as your addiction weakens. As more time passes, you will find yourself completely disgusted and repulsed by what you have previously seen and grew to find as normal. This will feel right and you will know this is how you should feel, once you get back to your true self. Never become complacent, but once you get to this stage you will know that your brain is functioning normally. Concluding Thoughts / Summary It is truly evil what these things can do to one’s mind, and how so much of the content deliberately exploits natural human weaknesses. Right now, porn addiction is severely underestimated by society. I would argue it is a far bigger issue than the noise that dominates the news. Everything else pales in comparison to how porn is hijacking our minds. It can appear harmless and without consequence, as if it was just another game or movie, but its power and influence is severely underestimated. It’s always the elephant in the room, the enemy in plain sight, that turns out to be the most dangerous. Awareness of the problem is the first step, followed by decisive action. It’s all in your hands now. I’ve done my best to lay out possible ways of approaching porn addiction recovery, but it still doesn’t make taking the action any easier. There is no panacea, no one single thing you can do to magically recover. Focus on using a combination of the strategies I have outlined and come up with your own. You should be aware that the addiction is powerful, but you should also know that you are able to quit. Always cultivate your self-awareness, which will help you see for yourself how much better of a life you could be living. Gradually this will take away any urges, when you see pornographic contents and your urges for what they are. Be wary of certain categories and what the intention of the creators is. Question objectively what you have watched and why you watched it. Discovering this dark truth will make you want to stay away for good. When you reach rock bottom, the only way is up. There is unlimited potential to soar. Those who have been exposed to porn at a very young age may have more difficulty in quitting, but it is possible for anyone. If you’ve dealt with addiction for a long time, you will have to fight through withdrawals to get to the other side. Changes to the status quo in your mind will be uncomfortable. You should take pleasure in this discomfort knowing that you are progressing. Remember that it doesn’t take any superhuman strength or willpower, but it does require consistent effort. Everyone can quit if they approach it correctly. Lay the foundation as outlined and build upon it to make progress. You are guaranteed to see an improvement if you give it time. Whenever you feel an urge, remember that the resistance you offer is at the beginning. Once you have started watching, or even primed the mind with sexual thoughts, it is almost always very difficult to stop. Once this initial static friction of the mind’s resistance is broken, the path of least resistance is to continue watching, rather than turn it off. Like a train, once it starts going, it is very hard to stop. When you have broken your resistance and principles by watching, it is easy to justify watching just a little bit more. And once your brain has been primed, sexual thoughts will dominate logic. Be especially carefully in the early stages of recovery, or when you have gotten complacent, as the addicted mind can suddenly turn against you with surprising force. As laid out, porn addiction is one of the simplest yet most complex problems to tackle. Please reread this book to internalize all the advice and messages, pick up on the more subtle points, and continuously focus on getting better. — I would like to say thank you for reading this book and for taking a major step in your recovery efforts. I hope that this helps you in some way. When putting this together, I felt a powerful need to write and share these words to help people around the world. With this book, I could go beyond just helping one person at a time. Please spread this message with as many people as you can. There is deep and silent suffering in many individuals who haven’t gotten the help they need. While there are stigmas that may hinder necessary action, helping others deal with this problem outweighs everything else. Please share this book online or in person to others who may benefit from its knowledge. Once you have become clean and experienced the improvements that have come about, it is important to help others overcome this addiction as well. We will succeed together against this common enemy. If this problem is not addressed properly, there will be a full-blown epidemic in society and cases of addiction are only going to get worse. Future generations will have to suffer for nothing if we can’t put together a proper solution. I believe this is more than just a book to quit addiction, it is the start of something bigger. We need a catalyst to bring about positive worldly change. I encourage you to take the steps to achieve this. I believe that together, porn will be a distant memory for all of us. My dream is to live in a world where porn addiction is non-existent. One where people will not be tricked away from having a healthy sex life, and one where everyone has the mental capability and clarity to engage in higher pursuits. Ultimately, one where everyone is much happier and healthier. Emergency Section If you are close to relapse, you need to be prepared to avoid going down the negative spiral. Because your mind does not work properly in these stressful moments, you have to prepare in advance to be able to handle these situations. Have this section on hand, which summarizes several key reasons to avoid watching porn or relapsing. Please put some thought into this and add your own reasons. Download 0.56 Mb.
