• Students look at the map of South America and read out the different countries they can see. Drill the names of the countries chorally. • Play the recording. Students listen and put the countries in order. 2.24 Recording R OD So how long have you guys been on the road? J ULIE About two months – we left Britain eight weeks ago. R OD And have you enjoyed it so far? S IMON Oh yes, it’s been absolutely great! R OD Where did you start? S IMON Well, we flew from London to Venezuela – and we spent a couple of weeks there. J ULIE Then we took a bus to Colombia – we’ve had an awful lot of long bus rides! S IMON Some more comfortable than others! J ULIE That’s right, but it’s a great way to see the countryside. R OD And it’s cheap. S IMON Yeah, really cheap. So we were in Colombia for three weeks, and then we went down to Ecuador. R OD I loved Ecuador. J ULIE Yes, we did too. We stayed there for two weeks, and then we came to Peru. R OD Did you spend any time in Lima? S IMON No – we came straight to Cuzco. But we’ll go back to Lima on our way to Chile. R OD And after Chile? S IMON From Chile we go to Argentina, and then from Buenos Aires across the River Plate to Uruguay. R OD And then I guess you’re going to Brazil. J ULIE Oh yes! We go over the border to Brazil – up the coast to Rio and Salvador, and then up the mouth of the Amazon. S IMON And then we fly home. R OD Sounds great. Answers

They’ve already visited Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. They haven’t been to Chile, Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil yet. Optional activity Students work in pairs or small groups and tell each other which countries in general they have visited and which they haven’t visited yet. 7 • Tell students they are going to plan a backpacking trip with their partner. They are going to go during their long holiday from school so they need to plan for that length of time and consider the weather around the world at that time of year. • In their pairs, students decide which country or countries they are going to visit.
