a. Look at the instructions

-  Quickly  review  the  instructions  that  tell  you  how  many  words  you  can

write for each answer. For example, ‘No more than two’, or ‘No more than

three’.

- If the instruction is ‘No more than three’, you can write one, two or three

words and/or numbers.

- Underline keywords in the questions.

- Keywords will help you understand the main ideas.

- The questions are like a summary of the information you will hear, so use

the questions to give a general idea of what the topic is about.

b. Analyse the situation

- Who are the speakers?

- Is there a buyer and a seller?

- Is it a news story?

- Is it information about a special event?

- Is it a conversation between a student and a tutor?

- Is it a university lecture?

c. Predict the answers

- Try to guess what the answers are (eg. a name, a number)

- Will the answer be a number, an address, or a piece of information that is

similar to other information in a table or chart?
