IELTS Reading Exam 8
The reading section of the exam is a test of how quickly candidates can find information in a reading text and answer questions related to this information. The biggest problem that candidates face is not having enough time to finish the reading completely. Therefore, the key to success is to develop fast reading skills, including skimming (to understand the main idea), scanning (to find the location of the answer) and detailed reading (to understand the information well enough to answer the question correctly). Candidates should not start by reading the whole text and then try to answer the questions. Instead they should very quickly skim the questions first, then skim the text, then scan the text to find the locations of answers, and finally answer the questions. This faster approach will give candidates enough time to answer all the questions. The General IELTS and Academic IELTS exams both last for sixty minutes. Although they have a different number of texts, the skim, scan and detailed reading strategies are the same. The General exam is easier and usually contains five texts, with approximately eight questions for each text. The texts include advertisements, brochures, instructional documents and general interest articles similar to those found in popular magazines. The Academic IELTS exam has three longer texts, often about research into areas such as science, history, engineering, social science and literature. The vocabulary is often complex and difficult to understand. However, as mentioned previously, candidates do not have to understand the vocabulary to be able to get a high score. Instead, candidates need to be able to use their skills of finding meaning in the surrounding sentences and context to help them answer questions correctly.
