2.1. The title of the press as element of the journalistic news
Without distinguishing on the different types of titles (informative, persuasive, expressive, thematic, etc.) or at what kind of text are accompanying (news, chronicle, story, etc.), we should footnote that there is a clear difference between titration techniques in English and Spanish.
If we focus, for example, in the news, a quick look at any British newspaper and its subsequent comparison with the Cuban press highlights the first and most noticeable difference, the title’s release in English, is but rule generally much shorter. This question which might look superficial at the beginning, it is not so in a context where the available space is often severely limited.
Moreover, the brevity of the headlines in the English language does not respond only to a spatial problem, but is the product of the own language resources used in the preparation of their titles; resources that, in most cases, the Spanish language does not share.
Thus, from the linguistic transfer point of view, translation of press titles between Spanish and English (regardless the direction of the translation process), has added problems in the practice of translation difficulties. Idiosyncratic differences between languages and cultures in contact largely explain the presence of these difficulties.

2.2. Procedures and strategies for the translation of press titles
The main problem we face when discussing translation strategies and procedures is the polysemy of these terms in contemporary translation studies.

If get in into a delimitation of schools, we will alienate from the object of study in this article , which is not theoretical but applied to a specific field of translation ( the journalistic field ) and an essential element in journalistic review that is the treatment given to titles or headlines in the translation process .


In this regard, we have chosen to use the conceptual and terminological delimitation effected by Hurtado Albir ( 2001: 264, 266-267 ) , which makes the following distinction between method , strategies and translation techniques :

Each of the solutions the translator choose when translating a text responds to a global option that runs throughout the text (the translation method) and is governed by the purpose of the translation, but there are other options affecting the micro - textual units ( ... ) The translator can meet with problems when touring the translation process , either because they are a problematic unit, or to have a deficiency in a skill or knowledge, then come into play the translating strategies . The strategies pave the way to find the right solution to a translation unit; it will be reflected in solving a particular technique. Strategies and techniques therefore occupy different spaces in solving problem: the first refers to the process, the latter affect the outcome.

In line with this classification Hurtado, reffered to the classification of translation techniques proposed by this translator : adaptation , linguistic expansion , amplification , tracing , compensation, linguistic compression , discursive creation , description, elision , coined equivalent ,generalization , modulation, particularization , loan, replacement, literal translation , transposition and variation.


This article contributions from authors like Vinay and Dalbernet (1958 ) , Nida (1964 ) , Vázquez Ayora (1977 ) , Newmark (1988 ) , Chesterman ( 1988) and Delisle ( 1993, 1999 ) has not been hindered , and the differences between different categorizations proposed by this author . However, for practical purposes, we understand that it is more useful to use an integrative proposal as Hurtado and leave for a better opportunity the study of the different perceptions about the terms 'technical' ' process ' and translation' strategy' that take into account different schools or translation approaches.
There is no doubt that, as far as terminology and classification is concerned, there is a widespread confusion of translational procedures, as well as pointed by Hurtado Albir (2001: 264), stems from two fundamental questions:

1) The confusion between procedural mechanisms and mechanisms that affect the outcome.


2) The confusion between phenomena themselves comparing languages and textual nature phenomena.
We set as valid, therefore, the distinction made by Hurtado and to it will direct on the case study which is the continuation of this article.
As we noted in the introduction, the nature of newspaper titles or headlines is very peculiar. A headline should contain the most important part of the story and get at the same time, with a strong spatial limitation, capture the reader's attention.
This definition perfectly marries that offered by Van Dijk (1989), who suggests that a headline, besides to anticipate the substance of a story , is a textual superstructure that suggests how the news should be read .
Alarcos Llorac (1977) , defines the title as "a more comprehensive and detailed account statement or summary or other linguistic expression that refer specifically to and is physically contiguous ." But the definition of Steel (1971) is the one that we find the most attractive because for him titling is " the journalistic form par excellence and it is here that best manifests that distinct press syntax: endowed with a marked grammatical economy " .
It should be noted that each language has its own particular expressive conventions and uses few resources of its own, which is why the translation of press titles within the journalistic translation, is considered a particularly problematic area. If in addition we focus on the pair of English - Spanish languages, linguistic and cultural differences pose specific problems that we will echo in the analysis of case studies.
For Vinay and Darbelnet (1958) , the translation of newspaper titles is subjected to a number of stylistic conventions that are determined by the same function : the title should surprise the reader and save space , it should try to convey as much information using the minimum number of characters.
Vázquez- Ayora (1977: 396) states that the title “should cover the semantic universe of the work and its shocking range (...) depends on metalinguistic reasons rather than linguistic considerations," why can only be translated out using adaptation methods, equivalence and modulation.

Newmark (1988) makes a distinction between descriptive and allusive titles and regarding the latter emphasizes the freedom that should be given to the translator to dump the contents in the target language.
