Solutions to tackle the problems

As academics, decision-makers, producers, and consumers, the goal for all of us is to reduce these environmental effects while feeding over 9 billion people. Fortunately, we are enabled to face these challenges through technological advances, including agrobiotechnology. I want to share five inspirational stories about individuals who trust science to fix popular yet terrifying agricultural issues.

The nitrogen problem

Giles Oldroyd, a professor at the U.K.'s John Innes Centre, heads a team to grow cereal crops such as maize by incorporating soil microbes to create their own nitrogen fertilizer. This tackles three challenges: the lack of access to conventional nitrogen fertilizers in emerging nations, such as sub-Saharan Africa, where yields incomparable climate regions are just between 15 and 20 percent. Elimination of agricultural nitrogen drainage and simultaneous release of nitric oxide; and elimination of emissions of carbon dioxide from nitrogen fertilizer manufacturing. Farmers around the world will have access to healthier, greener grain crops if Giles and his team succeed. (Ritter, 2020).
