retardation can already be observed in the first stage of cognition - perception . 
The perception of mentally retarded preschool children is impaired not 
only because of the underdevelopment of hearing, vision or speech, but also 
when their analyzer is not disturbed. V.G.Petrova, J.I.Psychologists such as 
Schiff argue that the perception of these children has a certain number of 
characteristics . 
The main disadvantage in mentally retarded children is a violation of the 
generalization of perception. Compared to normally developing children, 
children with mental impairments require significantly more time to process 
the material presented to them, whether it be a picture or text. Also, children 
of such preschool age, due to their lack of mental development, have difficulty 
in identifying the main thing, understanding the internal connections between 
parts, characters, etc. It follows from this that the perception of children with 
mental developmental disabilities is less differentiated. 
In the educational process, these characteristics are manifested in the 
incorrect perception of graphically similar letters, numbers, sounds and words, 
as well as objects; this also includes a slow pace of recognition in principle. 
it is impossible not to note the narrowness of the range of perception in 
which there are difficulties in the material important for general 
understanding. In addition, the selectivity of perception is also characteristic 
of children of preschool age with impaired. 
The disadvantages of the above-mentioned perception reduce the 
possibility of an adequate understanding of the material, therefore, the 
perception of mentally retarded children should be given great attention in the 
educational process.

When children are presented with a variety of images that reflect absurd 
situations, they do not experience a clear emotional reaction to the fact that the 
absurdity of what is depicted is obvious, unlike children with a simple 
intellect. This can be explained by the fact that the process of perception is 
passive - preschool children with a disability in mental development do not 
know how to independently check and check their peers, and if they find one 
of the symptoms, they do not switch to looking for other absurdities. It follows 
from this that in order for children with mental disabilities to show results in 
these methods, they must be constantly encouraged to engage in this activity, 
otherwise the tasks will not be completed and the learning process will be very 
difficult. 
Preschoolers with mental disabilities have difficulty perceiving space 
and time, which causes them problems in directing themselves to the 
environment. Children, even at an older age, do not separate the right and left 
sides and make mistakes in identifying a particular room, be it a classroom, 
dining room or toilet. Difficulties also arise in the time frame-time by hour, 
days of the week, etc. 
Preschool children with mental disabilities distinguish colors, and 
especially different shades, much later than their peers with normal 
intelligence. J.I.According to Schiff, in 14% of cases, students of auxiliary 
schools are suitable for dark blue with a dark green object, and vice versa. This 
was not observed among high school students.
