Summary :
In this unit first you are made familiar with Indian Linguistic tradition influential linguists and their contribution in the field of lingusitics. Then we studied significant western linguistic concepts on which further study in this field is in progress. Basic concepts like Langue Parole, sign, signifier, signified, diachromic study of a language, synchornic study of a language, syntagmatic and paradigmatic relations in language changed the course of study in Linguistics. How Chomsky’s Linguistic competence is different from Saussurian concepts of competence and performace. Jakobson’s model of functions of languageted the foundation of further study in the field of linguistics.
