Conclusion In the 1990’s, feminism was well-established and the fight for equality was not as extreme as it had been in the past. Gender roles became less prominent and men and women no longer belonged to separate societal spheres. However, the fight for gender equality is still not over, and social expectations regarding gender still exist. In Pullman’s novel, he attempts to subvert these social expectations. As women, Lyra and Marisa refuse to remain subordinate in a patriarchal society. As men Roger and Pan do not need to take the role of the hero or become a part of the patriarchal society. As this novel is set in patriarchal Oxford, where women are forbidden, it is natural that some characters still project characteristics of the dominant form of masculinity. Therefore, despite the two masculine characters, Pullman attempts to destroy traditional gender stereotypes in order to progress into a sexist-free era, where women may be women, men may be men, or one does not need to be categorised by gender. 40 5. Initiation and Agency: 2000’s German Children’s Literature Published in 2003, Tintenherz is the first novel in Cornelia Funke’s Tintenwelt trilogy. Cornelia Funke is one of the most, if not – the most, successful female children’s authors in Germany. Her novel, Tintenherz, has gained worldwide acclaim, and has even been adapted for the big screen. The novel focuses on father-daughter duo, Meggie and Mo. Mo is hiding a secret from Meggie; when he reads, characters come to life. This secret is soon publicised when the evil character, Capricorn threatens to destroy their lives. This chapter aims to analyse characters from the first novel in relation to activity, initiation, gender roles, and toxic masculinity. Download 420.42 Kb. Do'stlaringiz bilan baham: |
