Redeeming the Witch Although Preußler’s KH was criticised for race, the text contributed to the changing role of the witch in children’s fantasy literature. Preußler created a “sympathetic little witch” in order to redeem the witch from her role as evil woman (Härer 2013). The text was written for the author’s three daughters, who had always found the witch to be a terrifying character and thus, Preußler made the witch character relatable, rather than the image of the monstrous female that is often seen in literature (Härer 2013). The little witch is innocent, her only wish is to join the Walpurgisnacht but in her quest, something goes wrong and she is scolded for her attempts. In order to remain inherently good and innocent, the witch completes good deeds, such as saving children and animals. The little witch is an active, autonomous character that Preußler uses to cast away the image of a “hook-nosed, malicious old woman in a black cloak” (Webb 98). Feminist scholars have used the witch figure as a symbol of woman “in her inevitable struggle against conventional man” (Sempruch 13). She is an “abused and culturally neglected” figure, who is truly misunderstood (13). However, despite attempts at redeeming the witch figure, the witch is still an evil character used to scare children at Halloween and in fairy tales. Even in Preußler’s redeeming story of the little witch, “her goodness is frequently contrasted with more traditionally malign witches”, which are still used to inject an antagonistic chaos within the book (Webb 98). Although the antagonists are other witches, children support the autonomous, innocent witch and 24 become connected with a figure that has been condemned in the past for gender and sexuality. The witch also connects with the readers as she acts prepubescent. The little witch is relatable to young children of both genders. Puberty is the stage in which boys and girls separate and find their differences but by ignoring the idea of puberty, the little witch is a character that can connect both genders and spread a positive image of femininity.
