16 Peter and Masculine Heroism In children’s fantasy literature, “heroes are traditionally male and the hero myth inscribes male dominance and the primacy of male enterprises” (Hourihan 68). According to Shadraconis, studies on heroism state that “the word hero has connotations with adversity, challenges, honour, strength and victory”, and “the hero’s journey often seeks to bring order to disorder” (2-3). Both Aslan and Peter take this role of the hero in LWW as they save Narnia from the evil White Witch. Shadraconis’ attributes of a hero support Connell’s concept of hegemonic masculinity, the “most honoured way of being a man” (Connell and Messerschmidt 832). This states that men should enact a certain “pattern of practice”, allowing “men’s dominance over women to continue”, and also men’s dominance over other men (832). By enacting certain attributes connected to the hero, Aslan and Peter both construct a hierarchy of masculinity where they are dominant of others. Peter’s superiority and heroism can be seen throughout the text as he takes on the role of the leader. He leads the Pevensie siblings in their first exploration of their new house, and leads them into battle at the end of the novel (Lewis LWW 3). He shows a willingness for adventure and heroics; both symptoms of the dominant form of masculinity, however, Peter does not assert a negative authoritative presence. The eldest Pevensie child is kind and loyal. He defends his sisters when Edmund verbally disgraces them and even defends Edmund when he betrays Aslan in favour of the White Witch. With the absence of a patriarchal figure in their lives (before Aslan), Peter takes on the role of patriarch, asserting leadership and dominance over his siblings, whether male or female. He has no choice but to lead the argumentative bunch of youngsters and is placed with the weight of Narnia on his shoulders. Peter is stereotypically boyish 17 in character, which is seen in his love for adventure, his argumentative nature towards his siblings, and his desire to lead, go on adventures, and to save the day.
