1. Thanksgiving Day: in the United States a day (usu. the last Thursday of November) on
which Americans thank God for the mercies of the year past and enjoy a holiday with special food
(usu. stuffed turkey and pumpkin pie). The day originated with the New England colonists and has
been regularly observed since President Lincoln's proclamation in 1863.
