As for that, listening plays an important role in everyday communication. Learning English is a language learning that is classified as difficult in schools because it has several abilities that must be mastered by students such as mastery of vocabulary, pronunciation, writing and also vocabulary according to English itself, and of course much different from Indonesian patterns. Learning English in schools has not been able to guarantee the achievement of students' abilities in speaking English because teachers provide more provisions in the form of theory and language knowledge rather than prioritizing language skills, both spoken and written. People overlook the role of listening, while overemphasizing the role of reading and writing in learning. Listening is one of the indispensable abilities in language. As a kind of input, listening is the foundation of speaking and writing. If a student does not receive effective listening input, He or She may not perform well in writing and speaking since the two output abilities are more difficult. Listening is important because listening helps students lay the foundations of speaking and writing. Through listening, students can acquire decent pronunciation and learn many useful words, phrases, and sentences. Although there is an increasing recognition of importance of listening, there are still many problems for teaching listening to second language learners in the classrooms. Mastery of English is not enough just to learn from school, but by participating in learning or training outside of school, such as learning services through private classes, and other learning institutions, non-formal education or community learning groups. Language skills will be better if they master the four language skills, namely reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. Language skills broadly include two main domains, namely language competence and performance, namely the ability to understand and use language properly and correctly in communication activities both oral and written. Listening is the ability to receive and explain messages in the communication process. Besides, listening is the key of communication, listening severs some of possible purposes; it directly supports other skills such as writing, speaking. Listening comprehension is an important receptive skill and also a useful preparation for listening in real life. The importance of listening has changed over the past years. Listening used to be defined as the ignored skill. Listening skills were believed to be learnt automatically through the practice of grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary. It was very amazing as listening played a very important life1. Listening is the activity in which students concentrate and trying to obtain meaning from something they can hear. To listen successfully to spoken language, we should understand what speakers mean when they use some words in particular ways on especial occasions, and not simply to understand the words themselves2. The result of language learning depends on the learner's listening skills. As Pokrivčáková claims listening is "a receptive communicative skill. It provides the aural input as the basis for development for all remaining language skills. By developing their ability to listen well, learners become more independent, as by hearing accurately they are much more likely to be able to interact in a foreign language effectively." Listening is a conversable process. In this process the student should be able to comprehend the oral message, to comprehend the situation, to identify the speaker's feelings, ideas, purpose, to identify the context, to identify relationships between speakers Learners also need to learn its phonology and syntax. Not only their knowledge of the structure of the language. If they are able to listen successfully, they need to learn to establish the context to which it relates . To sum up listening is a communicative process, in which the learners should be able to understand the verbal message, the situation and the context. Listening or Hearing. Hearing is an accidental and automatic brain response to sound that requires no effort. We are surrounded by sounds most of the time. For example, we are accustomed to the sounds of airplanes, lawn mowers, furnace blowers, the rattling of pots and pans, and so on. We hear those incidental sounds and, unless we have a reason to do otherwise, we train ourselves to ignore them. We learn to filter out sounds that mean little to us, just as we choose to hear our ringing cell phones and other sounds that are more important to us.Listening, on the other hand, is purposeful and focused rather than accidental. As a result, it requires motivation and effort. Listening, at its best, is active, focused, concentrated attention for the purpose of understanding the meanings expressed by a speaker. We do not always listen at our best, however, and later in this chapter we will examine some of the reasons why and some strategies for becoming more active critical listeners. Listening should not be taken for granted. Before the invention of writing, people conveyed virtually all knowledge through some combination of showing and telling. Elders recited tribal histories to attentive audiences. Listeners received religious teachings enthusiastically. Myths, legends, folktales, and stories for entertainment survived only because audiences were eager to listen. Nowadays, however, you can gain information and entertainment through reading and electronic recordings rather than through real-time listening. If you become distracted and let your attention wander, you can go back and replay a recording. Despite that fact, you can still gain at least four compelling benefits by becoming more active and competent at real-time listening. When you focus on the material presented in a classroom, you will be able to identify not only the words used in a lecture but their emphasis and their more complex meanings. You will take better notes, and you will more accurately remember the instructor’s claims, information, and conclusions. Many times, instructors give verbal cues about what information is important, specific expectations about assignments, and even what material is likely to be on an exam, so careful listening can be beneficial. When you give your best attention to people expressing thoughts and experiences that are important to them, those individuals are likely to see you as someone who cares about their well-being. This fact is especially true when you give your attention only and refrain from interjecting opinions, judgments, and advice. When you listen well to others, you reveal yourself as being curious and interested in people and events. In addition, your ability to understand the meanings of what you hear will make you a more knowledgeable and thoughtful person. When you listen well to others, you start to pick up more on the stylistic components related to how people form arguments and present information. As a result, you have the ability to analyze what you think works and doesn’t work in others’ speeches, which can help you transform your speeches in the process. For example, really paying attention to how others cite sources orally during their speeches may give you ideas about how to more effectively cite sources in your presentation. Download 53.22 Kb.
