The history of the development of science "Tribology".
1.1 Introduction to tribology
Why do machines fail? First of all, due to breakdowns caused by the low strength of materials, corrosion. But, secondly, of course, due to wear and tear. The regulation of friction and wear processes in machines is a serious scientific and technical problem.
The purpose of teaching discipline
Tribotechnics (tribology) is one of the most important engineering and physical disciplines, which studies the contact interaction of bodies during their relative movement. The knowledge gained during its development is fundamental in the knowledge of mechanics and physics of motion, in calculations and in the design of many units of machines, instruments and mechanisms, and the creation of modern materials. Therefore, the main goal of teaching this discipline is to study modern tribological information and link it with previous general scientific knowledge and future disciplines of a fundamental and applied nature.
The tasks of studying the discipline
In the process of studying the discipline, it is necessary to perform the following tasks:

• 
  master the basics of the theory of friction and wear;
  
• 
  gain knowledge in the field of experimental assessments of physicochemical , mechanical and frictional properties of tribosurfaces;
  

get acquainted with modern design and technological methods of friction control and wear reduction;
- learn to analyze, generalize and use modern triboinformation in research and applications.
The place of discipline in the educational process
Taking into account that tribochemical processes are a special type of physical and chemical reactions that combine chemical, thermal, electrical, mechanical transformations, fundamental knowledge of physics, in particular, solid state physics, is necessary for deep assimilation by students of the course; chemistry, incl. chemistry of macromolecular compounds, organic and physical; mathematics; resistance of materials, theory of machines and mechanisms; theoretical mechanics.
This course is not only closely related to the general educational fundamental courses of university training, but is logically their sum, which allows a specialist to purposefully solve not only applied, but also research problems of tribotechnics. Thus, the purpose of studying the course "Fundamentals of friction and wear" is to train specialists in the field of tribotechnics within the framework of the specialty. - "Technology and equipment of technological machines" with the qualification of "mechanical engineer".
