Research methodology. This article presents a
literature review of research on the role of reading and writing
in enhancing vocabulary. The literature review was conducted
using various online databases, including Google Scholar,
JSTOR, and Education Resources Information Center (ERIC).
The keywords used for the search were "vocabulary,"
"reading,"
"writing,"
"vocabulary
enhancement,"
and
"vocabulary instruction." The studies included in the review
were selected based on their relevance to the topic and the
quality of the research methodology. The studies included in
the review were published between 2007 and 2022. A total of
20 studies were included in the review. The studies included in
the review employed various research designs, including
experimental
studies,
quasi-experimental
studies,
and
correlational studies. The studies used various measures to
assess the effectiveness of reading and writing in enhancing
vocabulary,
including
standardized
vocabulary
tests,
vocabulary quizzes, and self-report measures. The findings
from the studies were analyzed using a narrative synthesis
approach. The synthesis involved a thematic analysis of the
findings to identify key themes and patterns in the literature.
Limitations of the review include the exclusion of studies
published in languages other than English and the exclusion of
unpublished studies. Additionally, the review did not include a
meta-analysis of the findings from the studies. Overall, the
research methodology used in this article's literature review
provides a comprehensive overview of the role of reading and
writing in enhancing vocabulary.
Analysis and results. This article does not present
original research with results. Instead, the article provides an
analysis and synthesis of the findings from the reviewed
studies. The analysis highlights the importance of both reading
and writing in enhancing vocabulary. Reading exposes readers
to a wide range of words, provides context for those words
and helps readers learn the nuances of words and how they are
used in different contexts. Writing, on the other hand, helps
readers internalize new words by using them in a meaningful
way, understand the nuances of words and how they are used
in different contexts, and develop a deeper understanding of
vocabulary by analyzing and using it in different ways. The
article also identifies various strategies for enhancing
vocabulary through reading and writing. Active reading
strategies, such as using context clues and annotating text
were found to be effective in improving vocabulary. Writing
strategies, such as journaling and writing in different genres
and formats, were also found to be effective in enhancing
vocabulary.
Finally,
incorporating
vocabulary-building
activities into daily routines and assignments was found to be
a useful strategy for enhancing vocabulary. The analysis
suggests that a combination of reading and writing strategies is
likely to be the most effective approach to enhancing
vocabulary. Furthermore, the article emphasizes the
importance of context in vocabulary acquisition and use. The
findings suggest that using words in context, whether through
reading or writing, is key to developing a rich and nuanced
understanding of vocabulary. Overall, the analysis and
synthesis presented in the article support the idea that reading
and writing are powerful tools for enhancing vocabulary. The
article provides useful insights into the mechanisms by which
reading and writing contribute to vocabulary enhancement and
offers practical strategies for incorporating these activities into
daily routines and educational settings.
