This is one of my favorite meditation exercises, and I think you'll really enjoy it, too. First, go to a place w h e r e y o u can physically relax. Lie d o w n or sit comfortably, close your eyes, and breathe deeply for a f e w minutes. Imagine a special room in your mind's eye, one with t w o comfortable chairs facing each other. You're sitting in o n e chair, and in the other chair is your future self—the person you'll b e c o m e five years from now. Your future self knows everything y o u know, as well as everything that will happen to y o u during the next five years. N o w imagine having a conversation with this person. Ask anything y o u w a n t , and listen for the answers. W h e n y o u ' r e ready, ask your future self to get up and leave the room, and imagine that your past self from five years ago walks in and sits d o w n . You are this person's future self. Take a m o m e n t to recall w h a t your past self has been going through. W h a t was your life like exactly five years a g o ? Imagine your past self asking y o u questions about h o w your life turned out; and see yourself answering with e m - pathy, understanding, and reassurance. Tell your past self about some of the challenges that will be coming up in the years a h e a d , chal- lenges that y o u ' v e already faced. 40 Love W h e n y o u ' r e finished connecting with your past self, imagine that your future self reenters the room and all three of y o u stand up. Your bodies begin to glow and b e c o m e translucent. You float toward each other and merge into a single being of light. W h e n this happens, y o u may experience an intense release of emotion. T h e three of y o u are n o w an integrated w h o l e , a single being w h o exists outside of time. This being is the real y o u . I encourage y o u to try this meditation at least o n c e , even if y o u ' v e never meditated before. It will help y o u recognize that there's a time- less nature to your existence, that y o u ' r e more than just a physical being moving forward through time. In the presence of this aware- ness, your momentary worries will shrink, replaced by feelings of ex- pansiveness and connectedness. S h a r i n g O n e of the easiest w a y s to lovingly connect with other people is to share something with t h e m . Share a conversation. Share experi- ences. Share stories. Share laughs. Share a meal. Share a g a m e . Share yourself. Life is filled with opportunities to share interesting moments with people. Don't be afraid to take the initiative. Sometimes w h e n y o u extend an offer such as a lunch invitation, the other person w o n ' t accept. D o n ' t let that stop y o u . Simply turn around and make the same offer to someone else, and soon you'll find a person w h o welcomes your friendly overtures. A popular form of sharing is to immerse yourself in an activity with another person, such as by going on a date, to a party, or on a vaca- tion together. This can create lasting memories that help solidify the connection. Sharing builds trust, and trust creates stronger bonds. 41 |
