M u c h like the other principles, courage grows with regular exer-
cise and atrophies from lack of use. Here are several exercises to help

y o u build your courage and generate practical results at the same 
time. 
T h e  H e a r t  Q u e s t i o n 
W h e n e v e r  y o u take a  m o m e n t to plan your day, write out your 
to-do list, or think about  w h a t action to take next, stop and ask your-
self, Where is the path with a heart? This is powerful because it will help 
y o u immediately discard the options that  d o n ' t have a heart. 
Even  w h e n  y o u ' r e sitting at  h o m e , trying to decide  h o w to spend 
your evening, ask yourself the heart question. Notice  h o w certain op-
tions feel heartless and empty, while other paths produce a tingle of 
excitement  w h e n  y o u think about  t h e m . Allow your heart to help  y o u 
find the right course.  N o t e that the  w o r d courage is found within the 
w o r d encouragement.  W h e n we identify the path with a heart, we feel 
encouraged to take action. 
Perhaps instead of watching television,  y o u ' r e encouraged to 
read something that inspires  y o u .  M a y b e instead of playing  c o m -
puter games,  y o u ' r e encouraged to have a deep conversation with 
your mate about the future of your relationship.  A n d  m a y b e instead 
of merely going through the motions at work,  y o u ' r e encouraged 
to push yourself to make the best contribution  y o u  c a n .  T h e heart-
centered question leads  y o u to the path of conscious  g r o w t h . 
I often ask myself this question  w h e n deciding  w h i c h article to 
write next.  D u e to the constant influx of reader suggestions, as well as 
my  o w n growth experiments, I never suffer from a shortage of ideas, 
but it can be hard to choose a topic because there are so many good 
ones to consider.  W h e n I stop and ask myself: Where is the path with a 
heart? the right topic usually becomes clear. It's the subject that scares 
me a little, the one I'm not sure I can write about well, the one that 
stirs my soul with excitement. On those occasions  w h e n the topic 
doesn't  b e c o m e clear, it's because the heart-centered path requires 
doing something other than writing. 
Post the heart question in a place  w h e r e you'll see it every day, 
or set it as your computer's screen saver, so you'll be reminded of it
