If y o u ' r e a competitive person, then use your inherent nature to your advantage. Competition can be very motivating, and the drive to w i n can help y o u build your power. People will often work harder to w i n something than they will for personal results alone. Competition causes the cream to rise to the top. I've c o m p e t e d in several speech contests because the competition drives me to work harder on my skills. I must be more disciplined in h o w I write my speech, rehearse it, and deliver it if I w a n t to w i n a contest against other skilled speakers versus if I'm only giving it for the benefit of the audience. The experience of competition increases my power to write better speeches w h e n I'm not c o m p e t i n g . Contests are c o m m o n in sales and sports, but w h e r e else can y o u apply this idea? C a n y o u start an office pool to see w h o can lose the most w e i g h t in a m o n t h ? C a n y o u challenge a friend to see w h o can earn the most m o n e y in 90 days? C a n y o u c o m p e t e with your spouse to see w h o can read the most n e w books in a m o n t h ? T h e nice thing about competition is that even w h e n y o u lose, y o u w i n . You m a y lose the contest, but you'll still see positive results, probably more than y o u w o u l d have if y o u ' d never c o m p e t e d . A contest is a great w a y to break out of a rut a n d raise your p o w e r to a w h o l e n e w level. Rest Rest is a key c o m p o n e n t of any weight-training program, and it's also crucial to building your power. Use cycles of exertion and relax- ation to lift yourself up to higher levels of performance. O n c e y o u ' v e 66 Power successfully completed a challenge, rest for a while before tackling the next one. Stretch. Co for a walk. Take a short nap. G i v e yourself a chance to relax and recuperate. Just as overtraining is a risk w h e n working with weights, it's also a risk w h e n building power. If y o u ' v e been feeling burned out and u n - motivated for several days in a row, y o u ' r e pushing yourself too hard. G e t a w a y from your work for at least a couple days. Take a vacation. Psychologically restore yourself for the next challenge so y o u can re- turn to work even stronger. • • You aren't here to be weak and passive. You're here to shine. Devel- oping your power will require hard work, but it's well worth the effort. The greater your power, the more success you'll enjoy at creating the life you desire. The deeper y o u can dig, the more treasure you'll find. Building a successful career is challenging. Maintaining a success- ful relationship is challenging. Achieving financial abundance is chal- lenging. These rewards w o n ' t simply fall into your lap. You must earn t h e m . Accept responsibility for your life, and rise to the challenges in front of y o u . Your problems exist to help y o u to grow, not to beat y o u d o w n . The weights are supposed to be heavy. Building your power isn't just about y o u . W h e n y o u align your power with truth and love, y o u can b e c o m e a tremendous force for g o o d .
