G r o w t h Blitzing
A growth blitz is a w a y to quickly increase your alignment with every principle. T h e concept is simple, and y o u can make it as easy or as challenging as y o u w a n t . T h e more challenging y o u make it, the greater the risk of failure, but the greater your gains will be if y o u suc- ceed. For each of the seven principles, set a specific growth target. D e - cide to make a small improvement in each area. Since the principles are mutually reinforcing, a small gain in o n e area will help y o u i m - prove in all other areas. For example, if y o u can b e c o m e just a little more accurate in your thinking (truth), the effectiveness of your a c - tions ( p o w e r ) will improve as well. Here are some suggestions for growth targets y o u might set for each principle. You only need o n e target per principle, but y o u can choose multiple targets if y o u ' r e confident that y o u can handle it. 1 . Truth • Confess to a lie or secret y o u ' v e been concealing (easy: confess to a stranger over the Internet; hard: confess to someone y o u ' v e been lying to). • W r i t e d o w n your most realistic prediction for w h a t y o u think your life will look like five years from today; then ask 128 Intelligence someone else to make a similar prediction for y o u , and c o m p a r e your answers. • Read a book on a topic y o u know virtually nothing about. • Invite an intelligent friend to debate y o u on a subject w h e r e y o u suspect y o u may hold erroneous or inaccurate beliefs. • Begin a 30-day media fast. 2. Love • S e n d someone a handwritten card or letter just to c o n - nect. E-mail doesn't count! • Start a conversation with a total stranger, a n d try to fig- ure out what's most important to that person. • Find a creative w a y to say "I love y o u " or "I care about y o u " to someone w h o ' s never heard it from y o u before. • G i v e someone an unexpected gift to let this person know he or she is appreciated by y o u . • Invite someone over for dinner w h o ' s never been to your house before. 3. P o w e r • W r i t e a fresh list of goals for every area of your life. Use the chapter titles from Part II of this book as your guide. • Set aside at least one hour to work on your single most 129 PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR SMART PEOPLE important project. Refuse to do anything else until the time has elapsed. For a more challenging version, make it three or four hours. • N a m e something y o u ' v e always w a n t e d to do that y o u could accomplish in less than a day if y o u w e r e totally c o m m i t t e d ; then go out and do it. • Plan and schedule your next day from the time y o u awaken to the time y o u go to b e d . At the end of the day, give yourself a 1 to 10 score for h o w well y o u stuck to the schedule. Try to beat that score by at least one point the next time y o u attempt this exercise. • Play a competitive g a m e with someone, and bet the other person that you'll w i n . M a k e the bet for something more interesting than money. 4. Oneness • Perform an act of kindness for a stranger. • Share a painful story from your past by posting it on the Internet so that others may benefit from the lessons y o u learned. • Identify an area from your life w h e r e y o u ' v e been unfair to someone, and take immediate action to remedy the situation. • S p e n d a couple of hours hiking alone in nature. Quiet your thoughts and pay as much attention to your senses as possible. • Initiate an e-mail exchange with someone w h o lives in another country, and find out w h a t y o u have in c o m m o n . 130 Intelligence 5. Authority • Cancel an activity that y o u realize no longer serves y o u . • Volunteer to be in charge of a group or family project, and see it through to completion by delegating tasks to others. • C o n d u c t a personal experiment y o u ' v e always w a n t e d to try, such as a n e w diet, a n e w sleeping pattern, or a n e w w a y of interacting with others. • For o n e day, w e a r an outfit that no one seems to like but y o u . • Teach someone else h o w to perform a task y o u ' r e very g o o d at. 6. C o u r a g e • M a k e a n e w request of someone w h o recently rejected y o u . • Identify an opportunity that y o u know is worthwhile but that y o u ' v e been afraid to pursue, and go for it anyway. • Walk up to someone and state in no uncertain terms ex- actly w h a t y o u w a n t from that person. • M a k e an advance c o m m i t m e n t to a specific course of a c - tion that makes facing one of your fears unavoidable. • Do o n e thing today that scares y o u . 131 PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR SMART PEOPLE 7. Intelligence • Call someone y o u know, and do your best to c o m m u n i - cate as authentically as possible during the entire call. • Take out a piece of paper and draw something that repre- sents the real y o u . • Identify a recent setback y o u ' v e experienced, and devise a creative plan to work around it. • Visit a museum and look for expressions of truth, love, and p o w e r in every exhibit. • Brainstorm a list of 20 new ideas y o u can use to improve your life. G r o w t h blitzing helps y o u achieve balanced improvements because you're paying respect to all seven principles. You'll find that some prin- ciples are very easy for y o u , while others are much more difficult. You control the pacing of these exercises, but one week is a reasonable time frame for completing one action from each principle. That's one action per day for seven days. If y o u w a n t a real challenge, try doing all seven in a single day. Also consider doing your growth blitz with a partner or group, so y o u can hold each other accountable. Download 1.6 Mb.
