A fter 1918 th e rese a rc h effort w as c o n c e n tra te d in th e new ly e sta b lish e d P e tro g ra d P h y sic o -te c h n ic a l In s titu te , w h e re Joffe su cceed ed in c o lle ct ing a g ro u p of y o u n g an d e n th u s ia stic sc ie n tists a ro u n d h im w ho fo rm e d the n u c le u s o f th e e n o rm o u s g ro w th of S oviet p h y sics in later years. T h e c re a tio n o f th is new in s titu te for p h y sics rese a rc h m u st have seem ed w ildly v isio n ary at th a t tim e since, a fte r th e chaos of th e w ar a n d th e upheaval of th e R e v o lu tio n , th e e co n o m y o f th e c o u n try w as in a d isa stro u s state. T h e r e w ere g rea t sh o rta g e s o f food a n d fuel and p ractically no scientific e q u ip m e n t, so th a t rese a rc h co u ld be d o n e only on a ‘do it y o u rse lf’ basis. A t th a t tim e th e re a p p e a re d to be a c o n tra d ic tio n b e tw e e n th e tw o sets o f e x p e rim e n ts a n d K a p itz a c o n c lu d e d th a t th e re m u s t be som e e rr o r in B a r n e tt’s e x p e rim e n t b ec au se it gave o nly h a lf th e classically e x p e c te d ratio of a n g u la r m o m e n tu m to m a g n e tiz a tio n . H o w e v e r, so o n a fte rw a rd s , E in s te in an d de H aas d isc o v e red an e rro r in th e ir e x p e rim e n t a n d c o n firm e d B a r n e tt’s ‘a n o m a lo u s ’ re su lt w h ic h w as la te r e x p la in e d in te rm s o f e le c tro n sp in . A se co n d p a p e r (2) d e scrib es an in g e n io u s im p ro v e m e n t in th e te c h n iq u e o f p re p a rin g W o lla sto n fibres; K a p itz a also b ecam e a d e p t at u sin g B o y s’s b o w a n d a rro w m e th o d of p ro d u c in g v ery fine q u a rtz fibres. A n o th e r line of w o rk w as th e stu d y o f a to m ic and m o le c u la r b e a m s an d to g e th e r w ith his frie n d S e m en o v , K a p itz a p ro p o se d a te c h n iq u e for m e a s u rin g a to m ic m a g n e tic m o m e n ts b y o b se rv in g th e s p re a d o f an a to m ic b e a m a fte r p a ssin g th ro u g h a stro n g ly in h o m o g e n e o u s m ag n e tic field (6). A lth o u g h th e ir p a p e r m e n tio n s th a t ‘e x p e rim e n ts in th is d ire c tio n have a lre ad y b e g u n ’ n o th in g f u r th e r w as p u b lis h e d . In fact b e tw e e n th e tim e o f s u b m issio n o f th e p a p e r in D e c e m b e r 1920 a n d its p u b lic a tio n in 1922, S te rn an d G e rla c h h a d n o t o nly p ro p o se d essen tially th e sam e id ea, b u t c a rrie d it o u t in p rac tic e (S te rn 1921, G e rla c h & S te rn 1921, 1922), a n d so p ro v id e d th e d e m o n s tra tio n o f sp atial q u a n tiz a tio n fo r w h ic h m an y years late r S te rn w as aw a rd ed a N o b e l prize. A th ir d field to w h ic h K a p itz a c o n trib u te d w as th a t o f X -ra y s a n d his p ro p o sa l (3) to focus a b ro a d b e a m o f X -ra y s b y a b e n t cry sta l seem s to have a n tic ip a te d w h a t m u c h la te r becam e an im p o rta n t p rac tic a l te c h n iq u e . Jo h a n sso n (1933) d e s c rib e d th e first p rac tic a l rea liz a tio n o f th is idea, b u t does n o t a p p e a r to have b een aw are o f K a p itz a ’s p a p e r. S o o n a fte r K a p itz a w as d e m o b iliz e d , an d follow ing a ro m a n tic trip to H a rb in in C h in a , he m a rrie d N a d e z h d a K y rillo v n a , d a u g h te r o f G e n e ral C h e rn o sv ito v , an d a son, Ie ro n im , w as b o rn in 1917. A second ch ild was e x p e cte d to w a rd s th e e n d o f 1919 b u t d isa ste r stru c k th e fam ily. In th e te rrib le c o n d itio n s follow ing th e R ev o lu tio n an d th e C ivil W ar, e p id e m ic s w ere rife an d Ie ro n im c a u g h t scarlet fever an d d ied. N a d e z h d a w as q u ite stru c k d o w n by th is blow a n d soon a fter she h a d given b irth to a d a u g h te r (also called N a d e z h d a ), b o th su c c u m b e d to th e S p a n ish in fluenza th a t w as th e n rag in g in th e city. O n to p of th is, K a p itz a ’s fa th e r also d ied o f ’flu at a b o u t th e sam e tim e. K a p itz a , w ho h ad h im se lf h ad a b a d b o u t o f ’flu, w as o v e rw h e lm ed by th ese trag ic losses an d for a tim e w as u n a b le to w ork. B esides Joffe, an im p o rta n t m e m b e r o f th e c o m m issio n w as A d m ira l A. N . K ry lo v , th e w ell k n o w n naval e n g in e e r a n d a p p lie d m a th e m a tic ia n , w ho w as late r to b e co m e K a p itz a ’s se co n d fa th e r-in -la w . B o th h a d a h ig h o p in io n of K a p itz a ’s scientific g ifts a n d w a n te d to h e lp in his difficult p e rso n a l situ a tio n ; a p p o in tin g h im to jo in th e c o m m issio n seem ed an ideal so lu tio n . T ra v e l a b ro a d at th a t tim e was c o m p lic a te d b ecau se m o st o f th e o u tsid e w o rld h ad no d ip lo m a tic re la tio n s w ith S oviet R ussia. Joffe set o u t in F e b ru a ry 1921, a n d as soon as he got to B erlin b eg an try in g to g et a visa for K a p itz a , w hile he a n d o th e r m e m b e rs o f th e c o m m issio n w ere o c c u p ie d w ith b u y in g e q u ip m e n t. G e rm a n y , F ra n c e a n d H o lla n d d id n o t w a n t to risk a d m ittin g so m eo n e w ho m ig h t p ro v e to be a y o u n g c o m m u n is t a g ita to r, b u t E n g la n d w as m o re a c c o m m o d a tin g a n d e v e n tu ally in M ay , Joffe su c ce e d e d in g e ttin g K a p itz a an E n g lish visa. A t last, late in M ay , K a p itz a a rriv e d in E n g la n d b y sh ip an d early in J u n e he a n d Joffe s ta rte d a ro u n d o f scientific visits, w h ic h c u lm in a te d in a v isit to R u th e rfo rd in C a m b rid g e on 12 Ju ly . T h e y w ere receiv ed very co rd ially by R u th e rfo rd b u t w h e n K a p itz a asked if he m ig h t w o rk in th e C a v e n d ish fo r a few m o n th s R u th e rfo rd w as r a th e r d isc o u ra g in g , say ing th e L a b o ra to ry was alre ad y c ro w d e d an d it w o u ld be difficult to a c c o m m o d a te one m o re. R u th e rfo rd w as r a th e r tak e n aback w h e n K a p itz a re p lie d by asking w h a t a ccu racy he aim e d at in his e x p e rim e n ts. T h e a n sw e r to th is seem in g ly irre le v a n t q u e s tio n w as 2 o r 3% an d K a p itz a th e n p o in te d o u t th a t as th e re w ere a b o u t 30 re se a rc h e rs in th e C a v e n d ish , one m o re w o u ld h a rd ly be n o tic e d b ecau se he w o u ld com e w ith in th e e x p e rim e n ta l erro r! T h is in g en io u s a p p ro a c h p e rs u a d e d R u th e rfo rd to a d m it K a p itz a a fte r all. A s a p o s ts c rip t it m ay be m e n tio n e d th a t a year late r K a p itz a asked R u th e rfo rd w h y he h a d agreed to take h im on an d R u th e rfo rd la u g h e d a n d said ‘I c a n ’t th in k w hy, b u t F m very glad th a t I d id ’.

T im e w ill show . . . .’ In fact h is skill a n d a ssid u ity w e re su c h th a t C h a d w ic k w as satisfied a fte r o n ly tw o w eeks a n d b y early A u g u s t K a p itz a h a d at R u th e r f o r d ’s s u g g e stio n c h o se n to stu d y ho w th e e n e rg y o f an a -p a r tic le falls off to w a rd s th e e n d o f its ran g e . P re v io u s ly th is h a d b e e n m e a s u re d by o b s e rv in g th e d e fle ctio n o f th e a -p a r tic le in a m a g n e tic field, b u t th e lim ita tio n o f th is m e th o d w as th a t p a rtic le s o f low e n e rg y c o u ld n o t be d e te c te d . K a p itz a ’s m e th o d w as to m e a su re th e e n e rg y in a c o llim a te d b e a m o f a -p a r tic le s b y th e h e a tin g it p ro d u c e d in a p la te a tta c h e d to a B oys ra d io m ic ro m e te r. T h is p ro je c t w as b ro u g h t to a successfu l c o n c lu sion w ith a m a z in g ra p id ity . W ith in n in e m o n th s o f th e c o n c e p tio n o f th e idea he w as a lre ad y d ra ftin g a p a p e r fo r p u b lic a tio n a n d b y m id - J u n e th e p a p e r w as se n t off. O n 19 J u n e 1922 he w ro te to his m o th e r: ‘T o d a y th e C ro c o d ile s u m m o n e d m e tw ice a b o u t m y m a n u s c rip t. . . . I t w ill be p u b lis h e d in th e P ro c e e d in g s o f th e R oyal S o ciety , w h ic h is th e g re a te s t h o n o u r a piece o f re se a rc h can achieve h e re . . . . O n ly n o w have I really e n te re d th e C ro c o d ile ’s school . . . w h ic h is c e rta in ly th e m o st a d v a n ce d school in th e w o rld a n d R u th e rf o r d is th e g re a te st p h y sic ist a n d o rg a n ise r. I t is o nly n o w th a t I have felt m y s tre n g th . S u ccess gives m e w ings a n d I am c a rrie d aw ay b y m y w o rk .’ ‘C ro c o d ile ’ w as a n ic k n a m e K a p itz a in v e n te d for R u th e rfo rd early on an d m a n y y ears la te r he to ld R itc h ie C a ld e r (1951, p. 66): ‘In R u ssia th e c ro co d ile is th e sy m b o l for th e fa th e r o f th e fam ily a n d is also reg a rd e d w ith awe an d a d m ira tio n b ecau se it has a stiff n eck an d c a n n o t tu r n back. It ju s t goes s tra ig h t fo rw ard w ith g ap in g ja w s — like science, like R u th e r f o r d .’ A m o re fan cifu l b u t p ro b a b ly e n tire ly a p o c ry p h a l v ersio n , p o p u la r in th e C a v e n d ish , w as th a t it w as a fte r th e cro co d ile in P e te r P a n th a t sw allow ed an a la rm clock to give ad v ance w a rn in g of its so m ew h at frig h te n in g a p p e ara n ce . T h is v e rsio n finds som e slig h t s u p p o rt in an early le tte r (12 O c to b e r 1921): ‘R u th e rfo rd g reets m e in creasin g ly p lea sa n tly a n d asks how th in g s are g o ing w h en he sees m e. B u t I am a little afraid o f h im . I w ork alm o st n e x t d o o r to his office. H e w ro te to his m o th e r (4 D e c e m b e r 1921) th a t ‘. . . A n o th e r in te re s tin g fe a tu re is K a p itz a ’s fo n d n e ss for re g a rd in g each p ro je c t as p a rt o f a la rg e r g ro u p o f in v e stig a tio n s, b u t th e n g e ttin g e x cited by a new idea a n d fo rg e ttin g a b o u t c o n tin u in g th e o rig in al p lan. T h u s th e p a p e r is d e sc rib e d as ‘P a rt I ’ a n d th e a b s tra c t m e n tio n s th a t fu rth e r w ork will be d e sc rib e d in a n o th e r p a p e r. H o w e v e r no P a rt II ever a p p e a re d , p ro b a b ly b ecau se K a p itz a h a d b e co m e c o m p le te ly e n gro ssed by a new idea th a t cam e u p at th a t tim e. T h is idea w as a p o ssib le new m e th o d o f stu d y in g how th e a -p a rtic le v elocity varied alon g its tra c k by m e a s u rin g th e tra c k c u rv a tu re in a m ag n e tic field. E x istin g m a g n e ts w ere n o t cap ab le of p ro d u c in g large e n o u g h stead y fields to cu rv e th e tra c k s sufficiently, an d K a p itz a ’s novel idea w as to use fields th a t w ere m u c h larg e r b u t lasted for only a very sh o rt tim e. T h is m a rk e d a tu rn in g p o in t in K a p itz a ’s career. O n ce th e large im p u lsiv e m ag n e tic fields h a d b een ach ieved he saw w hole new vistas o p e n in g u p for e x p lo itin g th e te c h n iq u e , an d th is led h im in to p io n e e rin g w o rk in solid state a n d low te m p e ra tu re p h y sics. I t w as also the b e g in n in g of th e tra n s itio n of th e C a v e n d ish fro m th e s trin g and sealing w ax tra d itio n to th e age of large m ac h in e ph y sics. O ne o f the basic p ro b le m s o f p ro d u c in g an im p u lsiv e field is how to p ro v id e a large sto re o f en e rg y th a t can be c o n v e rte d in to electrical p o w er an d rap id ly d isc h a rg ed th ro u g h a coil. H o w e v er, in sp ite o f th e in g e n u ity o f th e te c h n ica l a rra n g e m e n ts (see P I , P 2, P 3), p a rtic u la rly as re g a rd s p ro d u c in g an in te n se lig h t so u rce at ex actly th e rig h t m o m e n t, n o th in g v ery new d id tu r n u p . A t a b o u t th is tim e K a p itz a s ta rte d an even m o re a m b itio u s p ro je c t for th e p ro d u c tio n o f stro n g im p u lsiv e fields. W e c o u ld n ’t go f u rth e r b ecause th e coil b u r s t w ith a d e a fe n in g b a n g w h ic h I am su re w o u ld have given you m u c h p lea su re. T h e coil h a d n o t b een e x te rn ally re in fo rc e d and th is we now in te n d to do. . . .
